Review: Re:Zero 2 episode 1 – Like Dejà Vu All Over Again

It’s finally time. We got to watch Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2’s first episode, Each One’s Promise. Rem, Subaru, Emilia, and the rest are back, and Irina from I Drink and Watch Anime are collaborating to review their adventure. If you’re the impatient sort, then you can read our review here. It’s Irina’s turn to host!

Does Subaru catch a break in the first episode? Well, it’s Re:ZERO, so no, Subaru doesn’t even get a chance to get a glass of water. At least not on camera… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Was this season worth the wait? does Subaru catch a break? Does he get a chance to relax and enjoy their shared victory over the White Whale?

It’s Re:ZERO. What do you think?

Please check out our review on I Drink and Watch Anime! I’m looking forward to reading your comments. Re:ZERO is an experience that’s best shared. For safety’s sake, if nothing else!

  1. Re:Zero is one of my all time favorite series and I was incredibly excited for it’s return. I was not disappointed. I re watched season 1 before the premier and after that upbeat ending where Subaru and Emilia finally start to be on the same page, it was brutal to immediately lose Rem like that.

I’ll admit that back when the show the first aired that I was in the Rem camp. I liked Emilia a lot but Rem was still top character for me. Now after the re watch and this episode, I honestly can’t pick between the two as both are so damn likable. I’m glad that we got to see the scene at the end of episode where she tells Subaru that she has his back. It sucks that Subaru had to pay such a price to get to that point. I am excited to see Emilia take a front seat again and to see how they overcome this trial.

    1. “it was brutal to immediately lose Rem like that.”

It really was. Seeing the inter-spiced shots of Rem and Subaru’s possible life, where they had children together, fading as Rem lost the fight, was just devastating.

The Witch better have an amazing reason for doing all this…

I think you’re right about Emilia stepping up. I’m still firmly on Rem’s side, because I can’t forget episode 15 (original cut). There’s almost nothing anyone could do, under any circumstances, in any timeline, that could surpass what she did for Subaru. Emilia gave Subaru the support he needed at the end of this episode.

Rem dragged her shattered body across 20 meters of rock to use her last bit of magic to release his bonds.

That’s the kind of thing that sticks with me!

I’m not being facetious, either. Emilia really did a great job of support Subaru in this episode. It’s just that I can’t see anything topping Rem’s “Hu…. ma.”

That’s the kind of scene I would write if i could write.

      1. Those images of Rem and Subaru were so heartbreaking to watch. The cave scene plus the pep talk in episode 18 sold me on Rem’s greatness. She cares so much for Subaru that she supports him even though she knows that her wish will never be fulfilled.

For Emilia it was the latest episode plus the fact that she still was helping people despite her treatment by others. I also respected her when she knocked Subaru down a peg as those were words he needed to hear.

I am honestly torn as to which camp I would stand in right now. I was firm in the Rem camp when the series first aired but I thought that Emilia was a great character also. I never thought Emilia was “trash”. Now though after rewatching the series and the ovas I’m just not sure and I have a feeling that this season will make the choice even tougher. Yeah I’m being indecisive right now but I feel right now that you can’t go wrong with any of them.

I think the writing is grossly underrated with this series. There have been so many brilliantly done scenes throughout. How many series can pull off an episode like episode 18 and not have it be incredibly boring?

  2. A amazing start to the season. Can’t wait to find out what happens next. Enjoyed your guys review. Also you were right Petra being one of the children that Subaru saved during the arc with the mabeast dogs.

Whew! I thought I’d forgotten something huge! Thanks for the reminder.
