Shuffle! Episode 02 – Quick Summary
In Shuffle! Episode 2, “I Wanted to See You!,” Rin faces the wrath of the entire male student body in his high school. It was bad enough that he was the object of Kaede’s affections. Now, he’s the exclusive focus of both Sia and Nerine as well. Rin could handle the pain the other boys inflicted on him. What troubled him was that he now had the responsibility of finding an answer for all three young women! Can he find such a response within himself? As importantly, will his male classmates let him live long enough?

I’d forgotten how much the humor for this series is in my strike zone. I love running gags. That is, I love running gags that don’t get overdone. And so far, Sia smacking her dad over the head with a chair is still funny.
What’s also funny is how Nerine will quietly said something to the effect that Sia might have taken things too far. Well, in this episode, my favorite quote reverses their roles.
In the previous episode, we learned that Kaede had a fan club. A very vocal fan club. Well, the arrival of Sia and Nerine split that club into three. Now, instead of all the insane dudes going after Kaede alone, they’ve split their attack to all three girls.
Kaede might be used to it, but Nerine’s not. When the three factions converged on the three girls and Rin, Nerine cried (05:39), “Rin-sama, watch out!” She then unleashed her magical power.
Resulting in a very brief but very violent explosion.
As they gazed at the devastation, Sia said (05:48), “Rin-chan, that was going too far.”
“My apologies,” she responded. “It was a spur of the moment impulse…”
It was at this point that I made a mental note: do not mess with Nerine!

Was Asa bold in this episode or what? She didn’t just help Rin hide under the table. She made sure he got an intimate view. I much prefer anime where the woman’s in charge of that sort of thing.
One might almost say Rin’s a lucky man. Or that he’s in an enviable position. What young man wouldn’t want beautiful, strong, talented women to be interested in them?
But that’s one of the things that drew me back to this series. Rin’s a nice guy, sure. He’s happy-go-lucky. He almost seems to take Kaede for granted. But he’s not an idiot. He’s not an emotional cinder block.
The other boys in school pounded his back with faux-friendly slaps. Rin’s friend Itsuki said it was a guy thing – the other males were jealous and that was how they expressed it. That was the physical impact of being the center of attention.

But as Itsuki hung out with Rin as he hid from the combined might of Kaede’s, Sia’s, and Rin’s fan clubs, Rin let slip that he really wasn’t enjoying this.
“It’s not like I asked for this,” he said glumly (10:43).
I thought Itsuki was there mostly for comic relief. But shockingly, the guy had an interesting insight. He said (10:45), “It’s that kind of attitude that I called spoiled. You have those three caring for you so much. If that’s not happiness, what is?”
Do you know what’s cool? Rin had no answer to that! And it affected him for the rest of the episode. He pondered deeply what it meant to be the subject of the hopes and dreams of three such women, and it bothered him that he didn’t know what to do.
Isn’t that great? He’s trying to be responsible! He’s trying to step up! That’s one of the reasons I’m watching this show again. I really wanted something with a strong male lead, and Rin fits the bill. Okay, I’m also here for Asa and Nerine, but let’s not start that argument at the end of the post!
