Shuffle! Episode 05 – Quick Summary
In Shuffle! Episode 5, “Where I Belong,” Kaede tried to put on a brave face. She tried to make nice with Sia and Nerine. She tried to deny the feelings that those two were taking more and more of Rin’s time. But it became more and more clear that those two were here to stay. Nerine even prepared a bento for Rin – something that had been exclusively Kaede’s territory. Was there anything Kaede could do to regain some of Rin’s time? What did Rin’s dream mean – the one where he saw a younger Kaede saying she’d never forgive him? And will Sia ever stop hitting people with chairs?

Favorite Quote from Shuffle! Episode 05
At least Asa didn’t shriek or otherwise embarrass Nerine! That would have been mean. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Kaede had stayed home sick with the dreaded anime cold. Rin and Primula tried to cook, but all they managed to do was ruin a lot of perfectly good ingredients. So it was really fortunate that Sia, Nerine, and Asa stopped by after school.
Now, remember: Nerine is still learning to cook. It’d be more accurate to say the only thing she can cook is an egg omelet. But what she lacks in breadth she makes up for in depth. She immediately began cracking eggs and putting them in a bowl.
A very big bowl. To hold the eggs. Lots and lots of eggs.
Asa saw this. Keeping in mind that Asa is an accomplished cook. She saw what Nerine was doing and decided, right then and there, on the proper course of action. She shoved Nerine out of the kitchen and into the hallway.
As Nerine protested, Asa said (15:37), “Oh, I”ll be fine on my own here, so help out with the cleaning, okay? Go on!”
Asa slammed the kitchen door behind her.
At least she was polite about it!

Not only can Asa cook, but she has some skill as an artist, too! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Is Trouble Ahead?
Watching this episode on Crunchyroll, I remember how the OPs from this era would often alternate between English captions and Romanji. I miss that, though I could not tell you why. Must be a nostalgia thing.
I like the pacing of this series. I’ve seen some folks call it slow, but I enjoy the time these first five episodes have given me to get to know the characters and world. So far, it’s pretty light hearted. Even the glimpses we got into Sia and Nerine’s pasts as they relate to Rin weren’t terribly dramatic, from an adult perspective.
Sia has upgraded her attacks from folding to upholstered chairs! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I think this episode might have been our first indication that Kaede’s situation might be quite a lot different than what we’ve seen so far.The intensely furious look on younger Kaede’s face around 1:40 set the tone. We saw her scream something, but didn’t hear what until later – until Kaede herself remembered, while feverish, around 11:43, when she told a younger Rin that “I won’t forgive you.”
That’s very much at odds with how the relationship they have now! It made me want to know more. But in the meantime, I enjoyed what the episode had to offer.
Delivery: It’s the Details That Count!
My favorite moment was a little thing. It probably stood out because of how much I like Asa. She played a role in my favorite quote. Asa also gave me my favorite moment.
She knew Rin was hopeless when it came to cooking. So, she left the famous white porridge for him to feed to Kaede when she woke up. She left explicit instructions, which read (19:15): “Just nuke it! Don’t burn it!”
To be fair, Asa had every right to be concerned! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
The camera zoomed in on the note she’d left with that message. She had drawn a stern-looking version of her face. It really emphasized her insistence that he not burn it. Looking at that message, I got a sense that Asa was someone who cared about her friends. That she knew those friends and could anticipate their needs. And that she had pride in her own work (the porridge) and wanted it delivered to Kaede in the intended state.
Really, that little face she drew – it was hilarious. So, despite the foreshadowing in this episode, and despite seeing Sia and Nerine take out yet another group of fan boys, this was my favorite moment.
What did you think of Sia escalating her attacks from a chair to a bench? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
