Shuffle! Episode 08 – Quick Summary
In Shuffle! Episode 8, “Panty Date,” Sia decided she was done with waiting. She brazenly asked Rin out on a date! He said yes, of course. Kaede seemed okay with it. At least, that’s what she told Primula. Sia spent hours planning the perfect date, using the advice columnist’s assertion that the type of panties she wore would make or break her luck. Did that advice pan out? Was Kaede really okay with all this? And will Sia’s plan work out?

Things started out so well for Sia. She’s invested a ton of time planning the perfect date, one where she and Rin could enjoy themselves and – she hoped – enjoy a romantic moment or two. She started with something fun and relatively innocent: karaoke.
Before they could even pay for their room, though, they heard a thunderous voice shake the walls. One of the attendants rushed to the room and asked the young lady within if she’d keep it down. And guess what? It was someone they knew!
Mayumi at first complained to Sia and Rin – how dare the attendant interrupt her! But then she experienced a shocking revelation: Sia and Rin were alone. Which meant that they were on a date! Mayumi being Mayumi, she pulled out her camera (and I have no idea where she’d been hiding it) and began taking pictures.
Blushing under the barrage of flashes, Sia muttered that she was so embarrassed. So, Rin grabbed her hand and said they were getting out of there.
You may have guessed, but Sia actually enjoyed the moment. As Rin dragged her toward the door, she even said so, saying (09:46), “I lied! I’m not embarrassed!”
I kinda felt bad for her!

As I watched this episode, I had to reflect on just how warm the main characters can be to one another. Remember when Nerine happened upon Rin and Sia at the outdoor sale? It was an awkward moment, sure. Itsuki and his leading remarks didn’t help – Itsuki is the one who embarrassed Rin enough not to get a matching shirt with Sia! But after Rin took Sia away so they could try to enjoy their date, did you notice Nerine’s reaction?
“I would have liked all three of us to have the matching outfit,” she said (11:43).
My favorite moment’s in the same vein. Poor Sia had poured a lot of effort into planning the date. Yet, at every turn, they ran into someone they knew. Even Sia’s last hope, the concert, turned out to be out of reach because they had happened on a lost child and chose to stay with him until his mom arrived.
And Sia was at peace with that. In fact, it reminded her of when she’d first met Rin. Still, it had to weigh on her. All that work, all her hopes, and come to nothing.

Until my favorite moment. He had walked Sia home. They were saying good night until Rin said (21:15), “You wanna hang out a little longer?”
They seem to get along best if they’re spontaneous. I’m not trying to disrespect her plans or the feelings that drove her to make them. It’s just that she seemed to have more fun in the moments they hung out than in all the dashing from scene to scene that preceded them.
This is one of those harem shows that makes it tough (at least for me) to not root for all the characters.
