Shuffle! Episode 11 – Quick Summary
In Shuffle! Episode 11, “Girls of Summer,” Mayumi felt overjoyed to have finally, finally finished her summer classes. She was so excited, in fact, that she ran laughing from the classroom. Her teacher, Nadeshiko Benibara, did not seem pleased. Neither did Rin when she crashed into him in her haste. Put more accurately, she landed on him in such a way he could confirm her shimapan status. At first insulted he did not react, she soon realized she was in no small amount of danger: the other women, including the ridiculously powerful Nerine, witnessed the event. Will Mayumi get out of this unscathed? Will she punish Rin for his lack of reaction?

The show’s not above using tried-and-true tropes. Case in point: in her haste to get out of the school to enjoy her summer, she crashed into Rin. And, for reasons only known to/possible within anime physics, ended up with her panties in his face.
Mayumi felt embarrassed. She had not planned to flash Rin that day, much less end up with her knees on either side of his skull. She was all ready to act as embarrassed as she felt.
I think there’s a solid, narrative-based reason that Rin reacted the way he did. I think it has to do with the fact that he’s actively courting Nerine and Sia. Back in episode 9, he had to walk around with a topless Asa pressed into his back. And, of course, he lives with Kaede. I think the guy is so used to be around stunningly attractive woman that one more just isn’t the draw it would be for someone else. So, he said (02:38), “Hey, Mayumi, hurry up and get off me. You’re in my way.”
Her embarrassment vanished so fast that I had to wonder if it was feigned in the first place. Instead of being embarrassed, she was indignant.
“In your way?” she said angrily (02:42).
This was the beginning of Mayumi’s rough day.

Setup: Mayumi and Nadeshiko in the Spotlight
In this episode, we got glimpses into Mayumi and Nadeshiko’s lives. If I remember correctly (and it’s been a long while since I watched this series), I think this is one of the last, if not the last, peaceful episodes. So, it was nice to see two characters who haven’t been in the spotlight.
Mayumi’s always full of energy and sass. I like that in a character. I did laugh at how she ended up in a maid’s uniform sans panties. It seemed a very Mayumi-like chain of events. And how Kareha found and wrapped Mayumi’s panties in a gift bag, only to ask Rin to deliver them with her wallet? That was a very Kareha thing to do. Rin had no idea.

My favorite moment has to do with Nadeshiko and Rin. Remember back in episode 1 when she let her guard down and wished Rin luck with what was coming? I had a sense then that she really worried about the guy, in a maternal sense (I’ve never played the game – I have no idea if she’s a playable route or not).
Delivery: Nadeshiko’s Worry
She dropped her facade just for a moment in this episode. Rin was looking for Mayumi, because he had her wallet and the fancy package that, unbeknownst to him, carried Mayumi’s panties. Nadeshiko offered to drive him to Mayumi’s place, since it was on the way. In fact, she said he didn’t need to go at all – she would drop off both.
But Rin, being Rin, said he had promised to deliver the wallet, and that’s exactly what he was going to do.
As they pulled away from a newly green light, she casually asked (18:25), “Are things going well?” He looked over, surprised, and saw she was really worried. Very, very worried, in fact. This is my favorite moment because it took a character I already liked and made her seem mysterious. Why’s she worried? What does she know? Even back in the first episode, she seemed very aware of what Eustoma and Forbesii had in mind. How’d she know?

The episode didn’t answer those questions, and that’s just fine. I liked the mystery! And now I’m looking forward to things taking a dramatic turn.
