Shuffle! Episode 17 – Quick Summary

In Shuffle! Episode 17, “Honest Feelings,” the Sia within took Rin on an impromptu date. That made Asa angry, because Rin had promised to help her carry groceries to school. Rin didn’t know how to handle the suddenly aggressive Sia, and when he seemed like he wanted to go to school instead of on a date with her, she made it look like he had pulled up her skirt as she screamed for help from the police. Now, Rin had to flee with her! Did Rin escape the law? Did Sia’s plan work? And what will Asa do to Rin when he finally shows up again?

Shuffle! Episode 17: Primula was chill

I have a feeling that Primula was not in the least bit worried. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

After the rather unsuccessful date with Sia, as driven by the Sia within, Rin took the long way home. Poor dude had a lot to think about. I liked how he flat out asked if she was the real Sia. After all, he’s dealing with the world of gods and demons. Who knows what could happen!

What Rin didn’t know is that during the school day, Kaede, worried about Rin not being in school, sought out Asa. Kaede asked her if she had heard anything. Asa pleaded ignorance, then joked with her friend Kareha – something about maybe Rin had been kidnapped.

We know that Kaede is not the most socially sophisticated individual. She heard Asa’s joke and sprinted home – to call the police. By the time Rin walked in the front door, what looked like an entire police squad had taken up residence in his living room. A frantic Kaede stood nearby.

Rin didn’t know what to say. But Primula did. As calm as ever, Primula said (10:39), “Oh, Rin, welcome home.”

She was just so chill!

Shuffle! Episode 17: Sia changed the conditions of the game

Sia comes up with options. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Sia Joins Nerine

I have to respect how hard Sia went after Rin in this episode. It might not have been Sia prime (I think we should call the Sia within “Kikyou”), but it was still Sia of a sort. Rin was plenty pressured.

Honestly, I felt bad for Sia/Kikyou when she tried to kiss Rin and he drew away. The gesture hurt her feelings, of course. It also caused quite a lot of strife between Sia and Kikyou. But more than that, it made no sense to her.

Until the next day. Sia walked to school alone. She apparently needed some time to think. She happened upon Rin, Nerine, and Kaede as they encountered Mayumi. I loved how the shot of her watching them chat created a sense of isolation. Sia clearly did not feel like part of the group. I’m pretty sure they didn’t even know she was there.

Shuffle! Episode 17: Sia saw the same thing Nerine had seen

Sia came to the same conclusion that Nerine had. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Things got worse, for Sia at least, when Asa showed up. Asa smacked Rin’s back harder than usual to convey her displeasure that he stood her up the previous morning. Their back-and-forth was so nature, so playful, that Sia seemed to come to a realization.

“I see,” she muttered, disheartened (16:58). “Could it be that Rin-kun…”

Delivery: Sia Makes a Strategic Move

Like Nerine before her, Sia realized that she had already lost a battle, maybe the war, to Asa – who didn’t seem to realize she was in the running. Or maybe she does. It’s hard to tell with Asa, though she obviously digs Rin.

Unlike Nerine, Sia decided to take a different tact. After school, she convinced a reluctant Rin to take a walk with her. He wasn’t reluctant because he was nervous around Sia. Rin was nervous because he wasn’t sure which Sia wanted to talk to him. He expressed a ton of relief when he found out he was talking to Sia prime.

“I’m so glad,” he said (17:55). “You’re your usual self today.”

Sia went on to tell him Kikyou’s story. It had to be tough on Sia. Rin, too. He’s surrounded by complex women folk, isn’t he? Fortunately, they all have each other to rely on. At least for now.

But maybe in the longer term, too. Sia confessed her love for him, and she expected Rin to not return her feelings. But instead of being philosophical about it, or instead of being magnanimous about it, she decided to give Rin something to think about.

Smiling and happy, she said (22:17), “The word of gods is a polygamous society, you know.”

Shuffle! Episode 17: Rin wasn't sure how to react

Rin reacted to Sia’s assertion with a bit of shock. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Sia thought it over, and she made a strategic decision. If she can’t have Rin to herself, she decided she’d be perfectly happy to share him. I gotta respect that level of commitment and tactical thinking!
