Shuffle! Episode 19 – Quick Summary
In Shuffle! Episode 19, “Unforgettable Sentiments,” Kaede tries to maintain her cheerful facade as Rin misses more and more meals to go on dates with Asa. Rin might not notice, and Kaede might be able to fool herself into thinking everything’s fine. But Primula can see the stress Kaede’s under. What Primula doesn’t see is the incident that Kaede and Rin shared in their past – the incident that changed everything for Kaede. Can she keep up the pretense? And if she can’t, what then?

Favorite Quote from Shuffle! Episode 19
She had completely directed his attention away from her condition. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
This might come as a shock to you, but my favorite quote’s from Asa this week. Okay, it’s less a shock and more an expectation by this point. I’m a big fan of Asa, and I’m not going to bother hiding it.
Her relationship with Rin amped up in this episode. She and Rin went on multiple dates, and they didn’t bother trying to hide it. For example, when Rin expressed concern that the two of them might start rumors by going to the restaurant where Kareha worked, Asa asked if that would be a bad thing. Did you notice the Rin didn’t say it would be?
At the same time, it’s becoming more and more clear that something is wrong with Asa. As she sat in the restaurant, she began to feel more and more dizzy. Finally, she excused herself, only to keel over.
Rin was by her side instantly. So was Kareha. Rin cradled her where she had falledn. Once he confirmed she was still conscious and lucid, he said he wanted to help her up.
“DI don’t wanna stand up,” she said with mock stubbornness (13:51). “I want you to keep holding me like this.”
I’ve always admired her confidence. Though I wish she’d just come clean about her condition. She’s too good at deflecting attention from it!
Favorite Moment from Shuffle! Episode 19
I think this is the moment where Primula officially became alarmed. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
So that’s why Kaede is so devoted to Rin! It’s a guilt thing. Guilt’s a tricky motivator, though. It can produce results, but the long term prognosis isn’t always stable. Which is a good way to describe Kaede in this episode!
Primula knew Kaede wasn’t doing a great job handling Rin dating Asa. She could see Kaede’s artificial cheer and her crumbling composure. I think Primula expected some kind of emotional outburst at some point. I don’t think she quite expected my favorite moment, though.
The day started with Rin heading out to be with Asa. Primula asked if Asa still wanted to go shopping. Kaede did not want to go shopping. She wanted to stay home and do her chores. In exactly the same way as she had every day.
It was after dark. Kaede stood stirring a pot at the stove. Primula looked out the sliding glass door and remarked that Rin was late.
Her voice almost dream-like, she noted how happy Rin seemed when he left. She said that she’d never seen him that happy. All the while, she stirred the pot.
You could see how unsettled Primula felt. She asked if Kaede was okay with this, as long as Rin was happy.
Her eyes wide and staring, Kaede said (18:23), “Taking care of Rin-kun is what I live for, after all. As long as Rin-kun is happy, that is all that matters.”
Well. That’s not a healthy look! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
By this point, Primula is pretty freaked out. The situation got worse. Rin called to say he was eating at Asa’s place. In the background, Kaede could hear Asa and her mother joking with Rin. Their laughter was too much for Kaede. She hung up without saying goodbye.
Now alone in the kitchen, Primula approached the pot that Kaede had been stirring. She gasped when she saw that it was completely empty.
That was the moment we knew that Kaede is really not well. It perfectly setup the climax of this episode, but this moment felt quietly dramatic in a way I enjoyed. Having Primula, with her abbreviated emotions, communicate such shock helped me buy the idea that this was a bad thing.
What did you think of the ending? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
