Shuffle! Episode 22 – Quick Summary
In Shuffle! Episode 22, “Towards a New Tomorrow,” Rin moves forward with his plan to move out, which would leave Kaede and Primula living together. He and Asa grew closer and closer together. But the other males in school don’t support his luck, and Sia (especially the Sia within), among others, aren’t ready to give up on Rin. Will he ever get a moment’s peace? Will he be able to find an affordable apartment? And is Asa’s health going to remain stable?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Favorite Quote from Shuffle! Episode 22
Even Primula seemed a little surprised that she used her power. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Primula’s been pretty quiet for, well, most of the series. In this episode, she got a little louder and a lot more assertive, and it took Sia’s advances on Rin to make it happen.
Sia, her dad Eustoma, Nerine, her dad Forbesii, Kaede, and Primula threw a farewell party for Rin. Of course, Eustoma got drunk, and of course he wasn’t quite ready to give up on Sia marrying Rin. He even proposed a toast to their family ties.
Sia hit him with a chair for the effort.
But Sia took advantage of the chaos to straddle Rin and explain that no, she wasn’t giving up, either. She asked if he’d still marry her. To make her point, she pressed her breasts against him.
Suddenly, with a scream, she was hovering in the air. Then she crashed to the ground.
While still moving her food-laden chopsticks to her mouth, Primula said (16:00), “That’s far enough.”
It was great seeing Primula stand up for herself! It was also cool to get a glimpse of her magic. I think that was the first time she used it under her complete control!
Favorite Moment from Shuffle! Episode 22
This was rough on Kaede. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Sia and Others Refuse to Fold
I knew that Sia wasn’t about to give up. Nerine, too, made it clear she was still in the running, at least from her perspective. But Kareha? I’d forgotten she had thrown her hat into the ring! Asa wasn’t too keen on it, either.
“H-He’s taken! Sold out!” she said, panicked (19:46). He is sold out!”
It was funny seeing Asa, usually the one inflicting panic, showing it for a change.
Asa wasn’t a fan of Kareha’s plan. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
My favorite moment was a scene between Kaede and Rin. She’s had a rough couple of episodes. But she’s trying to hold herself together. It helps, I think, that Primula asked for cooking help. That gave her something to focus on.
Another thing that helped her focus, as well as accept that Rin was leaving, was helping him pack. She boxed most of the stuff that was in his room. That made his departure very real to her.
Delivery: Rin Says Goodbye
As he prepared to leave his room for the last time, he thanked her for everything she’d done. She thanked him, too. It was a gentle, pleasant scene. Both express a gratitude that seemed authentic.
Then he said he’d make sure to get up on his own every day. Knowing that would be a challenge for him, she wished him luck. Then she began giving him advice about how to live on his own. A lot of advice. By the time she said (13:09), “And try to be diligent with the cleaning…”, he looked concerned. She had begun to cry.
Tears streaming down her face, her voice still trying to be cheerful, she said (13:12), “…letting fresh air into the room, and… and…”
She couldn’t go on.
He did what he could to comfort her. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Instead of freaking out, he stepped up to her and touched her shoulders. But he left space between them. I think he wanted to let her decide what to do next. She decided, and quickly, too. She threw herself against him and cried herself out.
The show excelled at giving us these quiet, emotional moments. Well, I guess some weren’t all that quiet. But this one was, and I thought it was a poignant way to close Kaede’s arc.
What did you think of Asa’s collapse at the end? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
