Episode 1: Journeying Parent and Child

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 1 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 1, “Journeying Parent and Child,” the Golem stoically executed his responsibilities as the forest’s guardian. Despite being responsible for the forest’s health and existence, it didn’t interfere at all in the food chain — that being necessary for many of the animal’s continued existence. It did not often reflect on its lot in life. It simply accepted that its job was to oversee the forest, until it returned to the forest when its life was done. That is, until one day, when one of the animals reported seeing something strange. Upon investigation, Golem discovered something indeed strange — and most unexpected. Something that would send the golem’s life in a very different direction. Golem had discovered a human child. Why was the child bound in irons? Where were her parents? And what in the world would Golem do with a child?

Episode 2: Edible Herbs and the Oni’s Dwelling

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 2 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 2, “Edible Herbs and the Oni’s Dwelling,” Golem and Somali were having breakfast when some horned rabbits visited them. Golem invited the furry creatures to join them, and all went well until one of the rabbits decided it wanted to eat Somali’s honey mushroom. When she objected, it tried to escape, and Somali raced after it. Unfortunately, she tripped and fell, and her left knee hit some stones. Golem found that the wound was deeper than he’d thought, and he noted they were out of medicines. That’s when Shizuno, an oni, introduced himself and offered to help. Golem had sensed the oni tracking them. Can he trust Shizuno now? Or does the oni have nefarious plans for Somali — and the Golem himself?

Episode 3: The Sea at the Bottom of the Cave

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 3 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 3, “The Sea at the Bottom of the Cave,” Golem and Somali travel to a desert city. Golem tries to sell some of the herbs he had gathered for money to buy a meal for Somali, but the city was already well stocked, so his attempts to barter weren’t as successful as he’d hoped. While he was engaged with the merchant, Somali dashed to a low wall. Peering over, she was delighted to see an enormous pit. To her further excitement, she saw some kind of flying creatures that illuminated the darkness. Somali being Somali, she wanted to explore and ran to the entrance. But a huge wolf, one eye patched, snarled at her. How will Golem be able to generate enough money for Somali to eat — and have someplace to sleep? Or will the wolf make those considerations moot?

Episode 4: The Wishing Flower and the Promise Request

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 4 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 4, “The Wishing Flower and the Promise Request“, the sight of Musurika froze Somali and Kikiira in their tracks. The wolf-like being had just prevented a huge mushroom-like animal from eating Somali, but does that mean Somali can trust him? Kikiira began to talk to Musurika as if he’s trustworthy, but can Somali be sure he doesn’t know she’s human? And on top of that worry, Somali saw that the flower she had unwittingly risked her life to pick was dying before her eyes — which doomed her plan to stay with her father Golem forever! Will she have a chance to find another?

Episode 5: The Wandering Birds

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 5 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 5, “The Wandering Birds,” Golem and Somali left the city and their friends to head deeper into the dessert. Somali complained constantly about the heat, which Golem tried to alleviate by holding a tarp over her head. When they arrived at the next city, which was nestled in the caldera of an extinct volcano, a confrontation over ice cream introduced them to the harpy Uzoi. Her traveling companion, Haitora, apologized for Uzoi’s behavior, and the the two pairs shared a meal. They got along so well that they decided to travel to the next city together. Uzoi kept giving the oblivious Somali strange looks, and Haitora seemed to be gravely ill. Is their desire to travel with Golem and Somali based on mutual interests? Or is something more sinister going on?

Episode 6: Dying Flowers Look Up at the Birds

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 6 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 6, “Dying Flowers Look Up at the Birds,” the harpy Uzoi prepared to take Somali’s blood — all of it — in the hopes it would save her surrogate father Haitora from whatever disease was killing him. Meanwhile, Haitora was afraid of what Uzoi was going to do, so he warned Golem. By the time he got his point across, minutes had passed, and they hurried into the cave in search of the other two. Uzoi and Somali had traveled deep into the cave in search of water, and the harpy was ready to do what she thought she had to. Can Haitora and Golem get there in time? And why did Haitora seem like he was holding something back when he spoke to Golem?

Episode 7: The Footsteps that Stalk the Witches

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 7 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 7, “The Footsteps That Stalk the Witches,” Golem and Somali needed to part ways with Haitora and Uzoi. Golem and Haitora had spoken the previous night, and though Haitora knew nothing of where humans might be, he did have one very useful tidbit of information: he knew where an important village was. A village that collected information from all over the world! Somali took an immediate liking to the city, since all the witches there offered her delicious food. But it was the library that most interested Golem. Hazel, a witch librarian, helped them locate an index entry for a helpful book, but it wasn’t on the shelf, and it had not been checked out. So they headed for Praline’s room. But they had no way of knowing what they’d find there — or what it would do to Somali and Golem!

Episode 8: Meetings and Bonds Paid For

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 8 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 8, “Meetings and Bonds Paid For,” Praline gave Golem and Somali her own secret map of the library so they could find their way to the Head Librarian, who was on the bottom floor. What Praline didn’t tell them was that they needed to be careful not to trip any alarms, or the witch guard would attack. Was that an innocent oversight? As Golem and Somali picked their way down a huge central ventilation shaft, small insect-like sentinels spied them and sounded the alarm. With the guard witches racing in, Golem only has seconds to decide what to do. Can he protect Somali as they plunge down into the shaft? Does he have any other choice?

Episode 9: Memories of Minor Days

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 9 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 9, “Memories of Minor Days,” Golem and Somali were traveling through a rainy forest. Though Somali was keeping herself entertained by chasing frogs, Golem was worried that she would catch cold. He began searching for a place they could make camp. They found a tree house, fully provisioned, that sap harvesters used when they were working. It was deserted, and Golem fired up the hearth. At Somali’s urging, Golem baked something from a cookbook a worker had left. But their quiet father/daughter time was interrupted. Golem heard footsteps approaching. Would it be a friend? An enemy? Would it even be sentient? Or was some huge predator attracted by Somali’s scent?

Episode 10: The Infant Child and the Green Fortress

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 10 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 10, “The Infant Child and the Green Fortress,” Golem shared the story of how me met Somali with Shizuno. As we could have guessed, Somali’s force of personality played a big part in Golem not just kicking her out of the forest. After all, his job was keeping the forest safe — the forest as a whole, and not its individual inhabitants, and certainly not visitors! Shizuno, as expected, not only loved the additional insights from the story, but readily agreed to help protect Somali in the event Golem’s aging body failed. The next morning, even as Golem and Shizuno’s companion Yabashira traveled to town to work for the day, a threat approached from an unexpected direction. Will Shizuno and Somali recognize the threat in time? Or is the peace of Somali’s life about to unravel?

Episode 11: Those Who Protect and Those Who Threaten

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 11 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 11, “Those Who Protect and Those Who Threaten,” Somali, with Shizuno’s kind encouragement, worked hard to finish a present for Golem, her dad. She had a good reason to hurry: Golem and Yabashira had almost finished their body guard job, and all of them were leaving for the next city tomorrow — using a map from a friend. Very quickly, though, that became the least of her concerns when Golem detected human hunters approaching the house. Can they get Somali to safety — especially considering that the friend who gave them the map was Auntie Rosa?

Episode 12: Bonded Father and Child

Review: Somali And The Forest Spirit Episode 12 Best In Show

In Somali and the Forest Spirit episode 12, “Bonded Father and Child,” Auntie Rosa’s plan began to come to fruition. Her hunters had captured Somali, and since Golem’s first attempt to defend her ended with one of his arms exploding, they didn’t think he was a threat anymore. Yet, as they prepared to dispatch Somali, Golem lumbered to his feet, a fierce red glow emanating from his chest. He no longer seemed able to tell friend from foe as he unleashed fire and destruction. Will this last-ditch effort save Somali, or destroy her? Will any of them survive in the aftermath of Rosa’s treachery?
