SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16, “YOR’S KITCHEN / THE INFORMANT’S GREAT ROMANCE PLAN,” Loid became increasingly concerned after Yor started coming home late. Not only that, but she appeared exhausted, and there were cuts all over her hands. Even Anya felt concerned – or at least hungry, because Loid waited to cook until Yor came home. What’s going on with Yor? Why is she almost snapping at Loid? And why did Bond show Anya a vision of Yor sobbing?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16: Yuri could not get enough of Yor's deadly cooking

I think the blue face completes the humor. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

It was nice to see Yuri again. His snarky attitude towards Loid is intact (he even calls him “Loidy” at one point). His outrageous affection for his sister hasn’t abated one bit. And his capacity to take damage is also on display in this episode.

Camilla’s boyfriend roped her into teaching Yor to cook. At first, she tried minestrone soup. That failed in a big way. If you’ll pardon me for being indelicate, the food kept coming back up as fast as Yuri could shovel it down. Despite how much it reminded him of his childhood with Yor!

Many comedies would have stopped there. Not SPY x FAMILY. Yor tried again, this time with meatballs. Why Yor made meatballs with fishtails is beyond me, but she did. And Yuri shoveled it down again as fast as he could – which was just barely faster than it came back up.

He was really enthusiastic about it, too! He said (09:47), “It’s so good that I’m sweating for unknown reasons! The more I savor each bite, the more I see my life flash before my eyes! Huh? Is that you over there, Mom?”

Camilla’s boyfriend tried to talk him into slowing down before he did real damage to himself. I have to say, Yuri’s dedication to Yor is strong! Stronger than his will to live, apparently!

Best in Show Moment for SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16: Yor wasn't ready for the quiet joy of watching her family enjoy her meal

Yor has discovered one of the simple joys. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Yor, Better with a Knife than Potato Peeler

Do you cook for yourself, your family, or your friends? I often cook for my family. Notice that I didn’t say I cooked well, or that the meals tasted good. But I have a George Foreman grill, I have a meat hammer (it’s a meat tenderizer, but my sense of humor makes me laugh at “meat hammer”), and I know where to buy decent pork chops. The key idea, though, is that I love it when my family likes what I cook. Their praise feels so wholesome.

Forced, sometimes, because they’re nice people. But wholesome nonetheless.

I think you’ve probably guessed my favorite moment, haven’t you? The first part of the episode showed Yor coming home in a dark mood. Bandages covered her hands. She worried that if she could not overcome this thing, she might lose her family.

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16: Yor was under a lot of stress

Yor was serious in her desire to protect her identity – and her family. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I worried, as the episode no doubt wanted me to, if her role as the Thorn Princess had finally encroached on her role as wife and mother. The next day, we saw her carrying a grocery bag dripping with red liquid. Was she delivering proof of her kill? What was going on?

The liquid was tomato juice. Her mission? Learning to cook from Camilla. As we saw in my favorite quote, it was no easy mission! Yuri, Camilla, and Camilla’s boyfriend nearly gave their life in pursuit of that mission. But in the end, if was Camilla’s insight into Yor and Yuri’s past that saved the day. Camilla had the idea for Yor to prepare a meal her mom had made for them. It was a stew that Yor cooked perfectly.

Delivery: The Joy of a Simple Meal

Loid and Anya reacted with something close to shock (and also close to terror) when Yor said she’d cook dinner for them. This was after she confessed that she had been out late trying to learn how to cook. Yor placed the stew in front of her husband and daughter.

The music encouraged a sense of tension – as in, would they survive the tasting? Loid inhaled the aroma and thought (14:18), “It smells like… it’s safe.” Anya was a little less confident as she thought, “My last supper…”

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 16: Anya and Loid had prepared for the worst

Neither Loid nor Anya were convinced they would survive the meal. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

They tasted it. And they didn’t die! Even better, they loved its savory flavor! Yor watched them eat with gusto, and her feelings overwhelmed her. Her eyes welled up with the tears that Bond had foreseen, but they were far from painful tears.

Her thoughts revealed just how much she had been holding back (14:55): “I thought I needed to protect this life so that I could continue killing. But to think that having them acknowledge me… having them smile… would simply make me this happy.”

Now, I have yet to break down in tears over how much someone liked a meal I prepared. At least, not that I’d admit. But I get it. Her feelings came across as real and spontaneous. Those feelings flowed naturally from the narrative, and that made the moment all the more satisfying.
