SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18, “UNCLE THE PRIVATE TUTOR / DAYBREAK,” Anya faced a major crisis: midterms. If she scored in the bottom two for her class, she would earn a Tonitrus Bolt – for each subject in which she scored lowest! The situation was so bad that Yor called her brother Yuri to help tutor Anya. Was that a good idea? Can Yuri actually help Anya study? And how will Anya react when she reads Yuri’s mind – and realizes he is on the the side opposite side as her Papa Loid?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Favorite Quote from SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18: Anya knew she had dodged a bullet; Bond was not so lucky

I think Anya might have feared for Bond’s safety. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Anya’s a sweet child (all things considered). She doesn’t want to hurt her mom’s feelings. At the same time, though she might not be academically brilliant, she can recognize danger when she see it (well, more often than not). She showed both characteristics in my favorite quote.

Yuri visited and tried to tutor Anya. He tried his best. But Anya’s “what’s grammar” question proved what should have been obvious from the start: at this stage of her life, Anya’s academic career is a non-starter.

Yuri left in a moment of anger. As soon as he heard Yor lament that her cookies would go to waste, he stormed back in, scarfed down the whole plate of cookies (minus a few crumbled bits).

As Yuri stormed back out, retching sounds clearly audible in the hallway, Yor offered to make more for Anya.

“It’s okay,” she said magnanimously (10:11). “Anya is full right now.”

She preserved her life and Yor’s self-confidence. See? Anya’s learning!

Best in Show Moment for SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18: Loid had not expected Anya to do as well as she did

Loid, disguised as a faculty member, received a shock when he reviewed Anya’s test. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Channeling Galaxy Quest

Seeing Daybreak rolling around for no good reason reminded me of the Galaxy Quest scene where Tim Allen, playing Jason Nesmith (who played Peter Quincy Taggart) did almost the same thing. I still laugh when Sigourney Weaver, playing Gwen DeMarco (playing Lieutenant Tawny Madison), asked, “Does the rolling help?” The tone in her voice cracks me up.

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18: Daybreak can't help but be an idiot

Yeah, dude’s just rolling around because he thinks it’s cool. Sigh. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I hesitate to type this, but here it is: this episode did not resonate with me. It’s because the show has set such a high bar that when it’s merely fun, it feels like a letdown! I won’t hold it against the show. I still enjoyed the episode. Only, I missed any moments like revelations of Sylvia-Sherwood’s past or Yor’s awesomeness.

Speaking of which, isn’t it about time we see her cut loose? Or learn more about her? I remember that scene back in episode 2, after she’s finished her mission, she looked around at all the dead bodies. The memory of her co-workers hinting she should find a partner echoed in her mind. “But it’s hopeless,” she had said (07:45). “When it comes to homemaking… Cleaning is the only thing I can do.”

Well, there’s always the next episode.

Delivery: Loid’s Moment of Pride in Anya

In this episode, I didn’t see any highlights that resonated with me at that level. But there there was one moment that did stand out. It was one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” sort of things. Loid had just “defeated” Daybreak (what a maroon!). He broke into the midterm tests. His goal was to change enough of Anya’s answers so she passed. He knew no one would believe a Stella. No, he would just make sure she answered enough not to be in the bottom two.

He flipped through the tests. He found Anya’s. And reading it, he paused (20:13). He saw something he had not expected.

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 18: Anya's test surprised Loid

Loid, disguised as a teacher, found Anya’s test. What he saw surprised him. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

We learn later that Loid had not changed her test. He saw that on her own, she had managed not to be in the bottom two. Why did I like this moment? Because Loid recognized that Anya’s efforts had paid off. Before, she would have been the very bottom score, probably by a long shot. But now, maybe because of Yuri’s inspiration (because it certainly wasn’t his actual tutoring!), Anya had stepped up her game. And her dad had seen and recognized it.

Yeah, I’m partial to dad/daughter moments!
