SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 20 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 20, “INVESTIGATE THE GENERAL HOSPITAL / DECIPHER THE PERPLEXING CODE,” Anya received a class assignment to interview someone about their job. Should she pick Yor, with everything that would entail? Or should she pick Loid – which might be even more fraught with peril? Later, the spy TV series inspired Anya to come up with a code. Who within her circle can decode it? And what does it mean?

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 20: Anya loved all the attention

Having all those adults fawn over her would certainly be an amazing experience for Anya. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

One of the things this show gets right is the kids’ perspectives. Anya and her friends see the world as kids see the world. They think and talk like actual kids! Best of all, they react like kids. Case in point: my favorite quote of the episode.

Anya wisely decided to interview her father for her class project (though seeing Assassin Anya tailing her mother in Yor’s imagination was hilarious — but probably not suitable for classroom consumption). Anya accompanied Loid to the hospital, where Loid introduced her to the staff.

Who immediately fell under Anya’s Spell of Cuteness. They offered her praise, they offered her candy, and they offered her fruit drinks.

Anya took a moment to write this entry in her notebook (07:36): “Papa’s workplace is paradise.”

That was such a kid thing to say!

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 20: Loid is a wise man

Loid gave Anya a fantastic answer. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Like the previous episode, I enjoyed this one. And unlike episode 15, I didn’t get any major dramatic beats. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I enjoy episodes like this one, but I enjoyed episode 15 more!

That said, this show did have a moment that very much appealed to me. Anya, magnifying glass in hand, asked Loid why he had chosen the life of a psychiatrist. He considered, then said (06:29), ““Everyone gets a cold sometimes, right? But it’s not just the body. The mind can go through that, too. There are a lot of people who catch colds, but in their minds.”

I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve tried to convey that thought to people. I grew up on a prototypical US farm. We men were encouraged to deny that non-physical pain even mattered. If someone suffered from depression, the expectation was that they would suck it up and keep going. That’s not the only cause, but it’s part of why farmers have such incidence of suicide

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 20: Anya took diligent notes. Illegible, but dilligent.

Anya took careful notes. Too bad no one – including Anya! – could read them! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’ve actually gotten into arguments with people, often people professing to hold a particular faith, who said there’s no such thing as mental illness. Instead, they insisted it was the sign of a moral deficiency, or that folks just needed to think positive or pray harder.

Seeing Loid so succinctly describe the real situation felt so vindicating. Yes, he’s an anime character. But he spoke the facts, and I’ll take facts wherever I can find them!

What did you think of Loid questioning why Anya seemed to be taking notes at such random times? What were your favorite moments in the episode? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
