In SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 22, “THE UNDERGROUND TENNIS TOURNAMENT: THE CAMPBELLDON,” Fiona Frost/Nightfall presented the details of their next mission to Loid Forger/Twilight: they had to retrieve a painting that contained damaging secrets. To get close to it, Nightfall entered them into an underground tennis tournament. Twilight went along with the plan. But Nightfall had neglected to mention some potentially lethal details. How will Loid react when he finds out? What are the implications of Fiona’s plan for Yor Forger? And how much longer can Anya keep her powers a secret? Because she keeps saying the wrong thing at the wrong time!

Fiona has it bad. I talked in my review of the previous episode about how my experiences in life have made me very sympathetic to her plight. She’s a powerful, intelligent woman in a society that doesn’t reward those traits in a woman. As a consequence, she’s lonely. Her falling in love with Loid just made things worse.
It’s no wonder, then, that she’s developed a cold, hard exterior. She looks coolly on the world around her. She looks down on everyone around her (except Loid). And she maintains her frosty demeanor under all circumstances.
However, inside, she’s anything but frosty. Consider my favorite quote, for example. She reflected on how she thought Loid had lost his edge because he behaved warmly to Yor and Anya. Despite that observation, she realized she quite liked the vision of Loid being gentle and playful.
“Actually, a bouncy Twilight would be so adorable. I love him,” she thought, because obviously she would not say that out loud (00:41). After further consideration, she thought, “I’m the one who should make him bouncy.”
Seriously, I feel sorry for this woman. She’s in way over her head!

Setup: Misdirection is Cool in the Right Hands
If Yor could train with a tennis racket as much as she had trained with a blade, I wonder how her tennis skills would have compared to Nightfall’s? I’m pretty sure Yor would dominate – because let’s face it, she kicked a car off the road. What’s a tennis ball compared to that?
Though she might have to train to use the racket with her legs…

Am I the only one bummed that we didn’t get to actually see Nightfall beat the Beefy Brothers into submission? I think that would have been a blast to see.
There are several moments that competed for my favorite in this episode. Nightfall picking Mr. and Mrs. “Phony” as their fake names (05:40), Yor considering whether or not she should eliminate Nightfall (10:59), and Nightfall and Twilight making a comeback against the cheating brother and sister (20:47) were all in contention.
But I’m going to go with a moment that showed how effective misdirection can be. And I should have known better!
Delivery: I Forgot Just Who Loid Is
As they walked onto the tennis court for the first time, Loid shared that he had only “dabbled” a bit in tennis after he heard about this mission. He had basically trained with Anya (who could spin around fast but could not put the racket anywhere near the ball) and Yor (who just watched with a vague smile on her face).
I expected that Loid would do well, but that the mission might be in enough danger for Nightfall to step up and do something to impress him.

Silly me.
I really should have known better. Team Phony (that name cracked me up) served first. Loid bounced the ball on the court, then tossed it in the air. I wondered how well he would do. I mean, “dabbling?” How good could he be?
Pow. He aced the serve (07:43). As in, blew right past the opposition. The guy didn’t have time to flinch before the ball had screamed past him to slam into the fence behind.
Shocked, Nightfall looked at him and thought (07:55), “Well done, Twilight. You’ve redefined ‘dabbled.’ I love you.”
Yeah, I should have known better. But it was still a great moment!
