SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 24: Anya was on the lookout for Loid and Yor

I don’t want to say Becky’s a bad influence, but… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Before Loid and Yor came home, he with a terribly swollen chin and her with a guilty expression, Franky was babysitting Anya and Bond. Anya and Franky had apparently played all the games, because she had gone to the window to watch for her parents. Franky sat bored at the table.

Anya, holding a curtain in either hand and staring at the moon, said something that took Frank aback. She later blamed it on Becky. And you know what? I can see Becky’s influence in this.

In one of her most serious voices, Anya said (11:33), “Mama and Papa are late. They must be shacking up somewhere.”

Franky didn’t look shocked. Though I’m sure not much shocks him anymore.

Favorite Moment from SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 24

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 24: Loid opened up a little to Yor

Something about Yor – and it might have been her kick – made Loid want to open up to her. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Yor is a Compelling Character

I might be getting a little too attached to the characters in this show. Seeing Yor despondent at the beginning made me physically uncomfortable. Either that, or I need to start taking notes to learn exactly how the writer, Tatsuya Endo, tricked me into investing so much emotional attachment to a fictional character.

Okay, he didn’t trick me. I went in with both eyes open. Still, that kind of skill impresses me.

On to my favorite moment. This episode gave me a real sense of Loid’s isolation. There’s the spy aspect. He, Sylvia Sherwood, and Fiona Frost by necessity live apart from society. Even their marriages are fake props to achieve a mission.

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 24: Gossip is dangerous in most worlds

Gossip can be a lethal weapon. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

But for Loid it’s worse. The gossipy neighbors assumed that since he was handsome, he must be cheating. When he saw Loid and Yor seeming to argue, even the bartender thought (06:16), “Being such a hot guy must be rough.”

What I’m saying is that Loid’s life has taught him to lock a lot of stuff up inside – deep, where it won’t distract him and where it won’t give anything away. That’s his coping mechanism. That’s how he stays on mission.

Setup: Yor’s Dangerous Uncertainty

Loid knew Yor was unhappy after defeating Fiona. I’ll bet Loid’s kicking himself because he didn’t at least give Yor a head-pat or something! But he didn’t, and that sent Yor into a downward spiral. Loid, experienced spy that he is, noticed this and decided to act. He took Yor out for drinks.

Loid. Knowing how well Yor handles liquor. Took her out for drinks. Yeah, that didn’t seem like a good idea to me. I wonder if the guy subconsciously wanted to kick off some kind of incident.

Whatever his reasoning, Yor assumed he was going to dump her. She tried to say it was okay. She tried to tell him she understood. However, the words wouldn’t come. So she chugged a fifth of Scotch. Loid tried to compensate by getting romantic with her.

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 24: Loid tried to turn on the charm -- it almost killed him

Loid turned on the charm. In this case, it was kind of like pouring gasoline on an open flame. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m sure you see where this is going.

His romantic mode pushed her buttons, all right. Her heart raced faster and faster until she couldn’t take it anymore. When Yor loses control, she gets physical. She kicked Loid literally head over heels. I’ll give the guy credit. He landed on his feet. Then he passed out.

I mean, come on – Yor kicked him. He’s lucky his head was still attached.

He woke up with his head in her lap. She was singing the same lullaby that his mother had sung to him when he was young. She forgot some words (hilariously singing, at 08:37, “I don’t know the rest of the words…”).

Delivery: Yor Kicked Some Sense into Loid

When he’d gotten his bearings, he listened as Yor berated herself for being a “musclehead woman.” Her words seemed to wound him. Maybe it was the physical injury, and maybe Yor is actually becoming important to him. Maybe both. But he started a soliloquy that I found so moving I’d like to reproduce it in full.

Loid said (09:31), “When I was little… I loved being in my mother’s arms.” He couldn’t even remember her face anymore. “Even on nights when we could’ve been bombed at any moment, just having my mother by my side allowed me to sleep soundly. My mother was strong.”

That’s cool enough. But now it got really cool. Loid said, “Anya tells me all the time that even if she’s in danger, her Mama will come save her, so she’ll be okay. The reason she’s able to smile and have fun like that is because you’re a safe place for her, Yor.”

SPY x FAMILY Cour 2 Episode 24: Loid's words touched Yor

Loid’s words got through to Yor. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Then silently, he reflected how he and his entire spy agency had been trying to do that all along. And here, at least for one child, Yor had accomplished what they could not.

What greater achievement is there in life? Giving a child a place where they know they’re safe and just be a kid – that’s the epitome of accomplishment. Loid knows that, too. It’s why he is a spy. I don’t think he fully understands the implications of what he said to Yor, but I think I do. He just told her she is the perfect woman for Anya – and the perfect partner for Loid himself. Like he thought, she has accomplished on a small scale what he’d dedicated his life to doing. That sounds like a great basis for a relationship to me!

  1. I thought Becky’s reaction to the sheep keychain was adorable. At first she wasn’t going to accept it because she thought the keychain looked to unfashionable for her family’s reputation, but she actually really wanted it. And she looked so happy the next day when they had their matching keychains at school.

    1. That was a cool moment! I loved how Martha figured out how to reframe accepting the gift as furthering family tradition. The show gives me a feeling these people really like each other, and I like that!

Well, not all of them, because we know Yuri doesn’t like Loid and Fiona doesn’t like Yor. But you know what I mean!

Please let me know what you think!
