SPY x FAMILY Episode 5 Review – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Episode 5, “WILL THEY PASS OR FAIL?”, Loid Forger, Yor Forger, and Anya Forger waited for the day when the school would announce the results of the entrance examination. When the day finally came, even Loid’s boss confidently predicted that Loid would accomplish his mission, because that’s what Loid did. But when Lid, Yor, and Anya looked at the results board, Anya’s name was nowhere to be seen. Was it a mistake? Did Loid’s actions during the interview sabotage their chances for success? And if the decision stands, how will Loid accomplish his mission?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

SPY x FAMILY Episode 5: At least Yor talked herself out of a professional solution to Anya's entrance

There was a lot of Yor goodness in the episode, and I could not be happier! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

How much does Yor care about Anya? How hard is it for Yor to not bring her work home? A lot and very, apparently, if this episode is any indication. Henry Henderson had just told the Forgers that Anya’s name was at the very top of the confidential list of alternates. All that had to happen was that another family would have to withdraw.

Yor felt distraught. So in her mind, she immediately imagined herself, clad in her killer outfit (and by that I mean, the outfit she kills in, though the other meaning would apply, too!), approaching the father of one of the students. She even delivered her line that she requested the honor taking his life.

He tried to argue that his six year old son was about to enter school, and he had to stay alive or his child could not enter. Yor told him, in her imagination, that was the reason she was going to kill him. And then the imaginary blood flowed!

“You mustn’t, Yor!” she thought, shaking her head so violently that Loid, Anya, and even Henry looked at her (04:44).

I guess when you’re a carpenter, everything looks like a nail!

Best in Show Moment for SPY x FAMILY Episode 5

SPY x FAMILY Episode 5: Drunk Yor is equal parts adorable and dangerous

Drunk Yor is absolutely adorable – and lethal! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Franky Runs Up a Tab

Before I present my favorite moment, may I just say drunk Yor is simply awesome? She spent most of the episode smiling happily. But as long as Anya was happy, Yor was happy.

Which brings me to my favorite moment.

Franky Franklin orchestrated a treat to celebrate Anya getting into the prestigious private school. Actually, I think he was getting some revenge for how Loid had treated him in the past. Regardless, he setup an absolutely delightful homage to Anya’s favorite spy show, with Loid playing the part of Loidman, spy extraordinaire. While Loid fought through various obstacles, including many of his spy colleagues, you could see Yor smiling happily to herself in the background.

SPY x FAMILY Episode 5: Drunk Yor smiles happily

Yor spent a good portion of the episode smiling happily. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I don’t think Yor knew what was going on, but she saw that Anya was happy, so Yor decided she would be happy, too. Then Franky cast Yor as Yorticia, “the most powerful witch in the world.” She was the next to last boss Loid had to fight.

I can only imagine what Loid thought as Yor approached, swaying from the wine she’d consumed. But even as Loid wondered what was going on, she struck.

Delivery: Drunk Yor is Awesome Yor

She dang near took Loid’s head off. In fact, she drew blood when her heel sliced his cheek. When he looked back at her, he saw a Yor consumed by rage, and she said, “Anyone who tries to kidnap Miss Anya will not get away alive!”

Then she struck again, and again. She’s fast. In fact, she might be faster drunk than sober! She reminded me of Johnny Fever in that episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, who got faster the more alcohol he drank. Which came out in 1978. And which I remember seeing when it first aired.

Ahem.

SPY x FAMILY Episode 5: Drunk Yor responds violently to even a fake threat to Anya!

Apparently, drunk Yor didn’t get the message that this was make-believe! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Yor had Loid on the ropes. He didn’t want to fight back, because he knew Yor was drunk and they were playing a game for Anya’s sake. But drunk Yor was in Protect Anya Mode. One of her kicks put Loid out of position, leaving his chest and stomach exposed. She spun to deliver what might have been a debilitating blow.

But the spin snapped one of her heels (20:33). She crashed rather gracefully to the ground. She rolled to her side and began to sleep off her inebriation.

I think the Latin phrase is In vino veritas. Yor already cares so much for Anya that she’ll go after anyone who threatens her – even Loidman! And now I have to wonder how much Yor will remember when she wakes up. And what Loid will say to her! That should be a fun conversation!

  1. This show has been a fun ride overall, but I think the portion with the make-believe was a bit of a letdown. It was a visual spectacle though (that’s always a plus) but I’m glad I stuck to the end because drunk killer Yor is too much precious to be missed.

    1. I see what you’re saying. The back-half of the episode was a departure from form. On the other hand, it really appealed to the dad in me, remembering kinds of crazy things you have to do for your kids. And Loid was lucky — his coworkers supported him! How cool is that?

    1. Reminds me that Ginger Rogers performed every dance move that Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.

Even the concept of walking in high heels freaks me out. I have no idea how anyone does it.

Please let me know what you think!
