SPY x FAMILY Season 2 Episode 4 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Season 2 episode 4, “The Pastry of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II,” a legendary chef offered legendary pastries in the school cafeteria. Merely eating one was rumored to put a student on the path to becoming an imperial scholar. But the chef was almost out, and Anya and Becky didn’t hear about them until they were almost gone. Can they beat Damien and his friends to the treats? Meanwhile, Franky, out of the goodness of his heart, tried to find a lost cat. His motivations had nothing to do with how much he wanted to date the owner.

Favorite Quote from SPY x FAMILY Season 2 Episode 4

SPY x FAMILY Season 2 Episode 4: Yor sympathized with the "world of kitties."

Yor has an interesting turn of phrase. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’ve read a lot of jokes about Yor’s lack of mental horsepower. Heck, I think I’ve made some myself. But I’m beginning to wonder: is she operating with a mental deficit, or does she just have a perspective that’s atypical?

I can’t answer that question yet, but I think my favorite quote gave me a clue. Remember when Franky was trying to listen in on cat haunts by planting artificial cats? One by one, the living cats trashed his models. He guessed that the cats eliminated his devices because they appeared to be outsider cats.

Yor showed that she is, at the very least, capable of empathy when she said (16:13), “I guess the world of kitties is also cruel.”

Does she really have intellectual challenges? Or is she operating on a level I just don’t understand? So far, I’m not sure!

SPY x FAMILY Season 2 Episode 4: Franky got to be cool

For a moment, Franky got to act cool – and he earned it! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I felt sorry for Franky in this episode. Granted, maybe he should have looked for the kitten simply to be a nice guy. But he still put a lot of effort into finding the lost cat. He called on a lot of his contacts. He even endured the loss of an invention he’d been working on for ten years.

Speaking of which, wasn’t it a lot of fun seeing Yor in action? Seeing her rip the power pack off Franky’s back, seeing her coming down like an avenging angel on top of the cat, then gently scooping it up and smiling like nothing had happened – all vintage Yor!

SPY x FAMILY Season 2 Episode 4: I think Yor gave the kitty nightmares

I think kitty is going to have nightmares. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Franky should have had it made. He should have been able to waltz in, present the cat to the owner he had a crush on, and walk away with a date. Unfortunately, reality reared its ugly head. Sure, the woman gushed over how nice Franky had been. She clearly felt tremendous gratitude to him. But so did her boyfriend.

I was afraid the episode might end there. But to my delight, it didn’t. Franky pushed his hands into his pockets and said (20:19), “Well, I’ll be going now.” As he walked off, both the woman and her boyfriend thanked him over and over. Giving them a two-fingered salute, he walked off.

Of course, he dashed into an alley so he could ball his eyes out. But before that, and as far as the cat’s couple was concerned, Franky got to walk away looking cool. I thought that was a great touch – especially for Franky!

  1. The Yor and Franky team up was awesome! I hope we get to see more of that. Once the card game came down to just Anya and Damien, I already knew Damien was going to let Anya win. There’s no way Damien would ever let Anya’s cute face be sad from losing. As for Yor’s mental skills, I’ve always thought that Yor was just looking at the world from a very unique perspective, not that she wasn’t smart enough to understand the world around her. Much like how Loyd kept misunderstanding what Yor was feeling in the recent date episode. He didn’t misinterpret Yor’s expression because he lacked intelligence, he was just looking at the situation from a different perspective than most people.

    1. I was surprised by how well Yor and Franky worked together. I still chuckle when I think about the cats hanging off Yor, too!

That’s the interpretation I’m giving Yor and Loid’s intelligence. They’re brilliant, in their own way. Just limited by their perspectives. What’s cool is that I can see how their specializations would lead them in that direction — so it’s another sign of great characterization!

Please let me know what you think!
