SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 38 – Quick Summary
In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 38, “Berlint Panic | The Informant and Nightfall,” Loid and Yor took Anya to a fair, where Anya seriously enjoyed some ice cream. But her mind-reading ability quickly got in the way. Can she communicate her concerns without divulging her telepathic abilities? Also, Fiona Frost needed underworld help. She turned to Loid’s suggestion, Franky_Franklin, for help. But Franky’s luck asserts itself, and the mission goes sideways. Can Franky and Fion get in sync enough to prevail?

Fiona has good powers of observation. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Franky’s a basically decent person. But he has a couple of things working against him. First, he has a reputation of not being able to attract anyone of the fairer sex. I’m not sure why not, but whatever the reason, his friends and acquaintances have a certain set of expectations for him.
We know this because when Franky came up with the idea to go undercover with Fiona by pretending to be a couple, almost everyone he met commented on him having a partner.
The second thing working against him is his own imagination. As he approached the venue with Fiona (a.k.a. Nightfall), his imagination got the better of him. He began to wonder if this was actually a date.
His thought must have been too loud, because Fiona picked up on them. To be fair, she’s a trained spy, so she is trained to observe and notice small tell-tales. But I think Franky made it easy on her.
Her reaction was pure Fiona. She said (15:57), “By the way, if this plan is just for your selfish desires, I will shoot you to death once this mission is over.”
I have to admire her dedication to Loid!

Nice technique, using his hands as her helmet! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Solid, Entertaining Reintroduction
It’s nice to see SPY x FAMILY again. This first episode of the third season had to re-introduce the characters, so it wasn’t likely we’d see anything Earth-shattering. But I have to admire how the mini-mission that reacquainted us with the dynamics of the Loid family was so interesting. Same thing with Franky and Fiona’s mini-mission.
That level of story craftsmanship is one of the things that made me decide to review this season for Fall 2025. I wanted the sense that I was backing a writing team that I trusted.
You all know how much I like strong female characters. So, you might expect I’d pick Yor;’s reintroduction as my favorite moment. It was close, honestly. She’s an absolute monster when it comes to physical strength and agility. At the same time, she keeps herself humble. I like that combination!
Yor and Anya remain true to form. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Still, Yor’s scene, as enjoyable as it was to watch, was exactly what I expected from Yor. Loid’s deductions about the stressed-out construction worker, or Anya’s panic as she tried to not let Loid and Yor know she could read minds, were entertaining – but exactly what I would expect from them.
But there was one scene in this episode that was only what I would expect in retrospect. It happened after Franky took Fiona into the club. They found Franky’s contact, but he didn’t want to work for Fiona at the price she offered. So he walked out.
Delivery: Franky to the Rescue – Sort Of
They immediately picked up a tail. Fiona, of course, realized it immediately. We got to see her take out bad guys in decisive fashion. If Yor didn’t exist, Fiona might be a good match for Loid. Maybe that’s why I feel sorry for Fiona.
They came upon an ally where a bad guy with a gun waited for them. He prepared to fire.
I did not expect what happened next. Yelling “Look out!” (19:33), Franky threw himself at Fiona and drove her to the ground. He gets points not only for trying to save her. He also wrapped his arms around her head to protect her skull.
She didn’t act terribly impressed. At least at first! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I don’t think of Franky as a particularly brave man. I don’t think he’s a coward by any stretch. But I took him for someone with a very strong sense of self preservation. Maybe he just really liked Fiona. I certainly could not blame him for his taste! Or maybe he’s a different man than I took him.
Or, hey. Maybe both.
Whatever the reason, I applaud Franky’s courageous actions! The fact that Fiona really didn’t need his help because she had already knifed the gunner is beside the point. Franky didn’t know that when he acted to protect her. So, good on Franky!
What did you think of Anya saying her dad was in a “tank battle?” What were your favorite moments? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments!
