SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 39 – Quick Summary
In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 39, “Avoid Getting Tonitrus Bolts | ■■■■’s Memories I,” Anya, Becky, and especially Damian encounter a foe beyond their strength or wit: Mistress Schlag, chair of the discipline committee. Determined to hand out Tonitrus Bolts, she descended onto the campus. Even Henry Henderson, model of elegance, could not stop them. What chance does Anya, Becky, and Damian have? Also, Loid recalls an event from his childhood. Before the war. Why was Loid’s father so against him being a soldier?

Becky had a good teacher. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
What kind of impact did Yor have on Becky’s psyche in season 2? We got a hint in my favorite quote.
After class, Becky and Anya talked about how they needed to be careful to avoid “winning” any more Tonitrus Bolts. Anya talked about how her father insisted she study, so she thought she should be safe-ish. Becky seemed to relish the moment of thinking about Loid, given she had a crush on the guy.
That’s when Damien and his two friends Ewen Egeburg and Emile Elman (who still remind me, I’m sorry to say, of Beavis and Butt-Head, respectively) showed up. They immediately started harassing Becky and Anya. Damien went as far as saying that one of them (probably Anya) would be the first to get eight Tonitrus Bolts.
Becky was having none of his sass. “Now’s the time for Master Yor’s Knockout Punch that she taught us,” she said (02:55).
Anya was thinking the same thing, but hearing Becky say it out loud, she urged her friend to not do anything rash.
Could a Yor power strike be anything except rash? In any event, it was nice seeing Becky take Yor’s training so seriously.

The best laid plans… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Loid’s Backstory Looms
Loid’s back story is going to hurt, isn’t it? Come to think of it, what do I mean by “going to hurt?” It stung a big already. I guess seeing violence erupt on a quiet street, with little Loid waiting to eat a croquette, hits a little too close to home right now. What with federal troops deployed to US cities and all.
But enough of that. I’ve made a conscious decision to focus here on the positive. The reason’s simple: it’s too easy for me to do negative. Way too easy. You wouldn’t like me if I unleashed the negative. Honestly, I don’t like me in that mode, either.
After I die, I’m going to have words with whoever designed the human darkness subsystem. That damned thing’s a real pain to deal with at times.
This is going to hurt, isn’t it? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Anyway. My favorite moment. I’m going back to the first half of the episode, because the second half spoke too strongly to me, and I’d like to ignore that for a bit longer, if I can. So, think positive thoughts as I try to focus!
SPY x FAMILY is a comedy. Mostly. Anya, the gifted little telepath who often sometimes almost understands the thoughts she read, saw that Second Son Damien was in trouble. Schlag was out for blood, and she was ready to hand out bolts for anything, no matter how minor. One of those “anythings” was a lack of a handkerchief.
Guess who didn’t have a handkerchief? If you guessed Damien, you were right. Anya knew that papa’s plan would be in peril were Damien to fall. So she acted. She offered her handkerchief to Damien.
Delivery: Anya’s Kind Heart
The kid is not without character. He protested, unwilling to throw her to Schlag’s lack of mercy. “Fear not,” she said, confidently (09:05). A sign saying “Mimicking Papa” flashed above her. “I always carry around two hankies just in case something like this happens.”
Damien made it past Schlag’s review, and astonishingly, he did not receive a Tonitrus Bolt. I was beginning to feel shocked that Anya achieved something when it became her turn to be reviewed. When Schlag demanded her handkerchief, she reached into her bag.
And only found one of Bond’s kibbles.
Of course, Schlag tagged her with a bolt. Right on the forehead. Shocked and feeling guilty, Damien looked down at the crying Anya, who lamented that she only imagined putting the second handkerchief into her bad.
Daminen thought (10:24), “Are you that terrifyingly stupid?!”
Damien asks a valid question. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
A valid question. One that we still haven’t quite answered. I mean, are Anya’s conclusions so muddled because she’s a child? Because she’s, to use Damien’s words, “stupid?” Though I suppose the answer could be some combination of the two.
In any event, their exchange made me laugh. That’s something important in these times. After all, every joyous laugh, even positive thought, pushes the darkness back, even for a moment. Every little bit helps!
What did you think of how Loid reacted to lying to his father for the first time? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!
