SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 40 – Quick Summary
In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 40, “■■■■’S MEMORIES II,” the child who was Loid regained consciousness to find the food stand buried in rubble, the nice lady he’d just been talking to a casualty of the bombs. Loid wandered the streets, looking for his mother, until she found him and tried to get them to her uncle’s home in Kielberg. But war followed them even there. What happened to Loid’s friends? To his father? Are they safe even in Kielberg? Or will war follow them there?

I don’t think Loid expected that. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I’m going to call ■■■■ Loid if you don’t mind. It’s just easier than typing “■■■■ said this” or “■■■■ did that.”
Loid became Lorand Spoofy, a man newly turned 18, so he could join the army. He had presumably lost his father, his city, his school, his friends, and most recently, his mother. He was ready to do his bit against the evil coming from the other country.
I had to laugh when I learned he’d risen to the rank of sergeant. Sergeant Spoofy has a comical ring to it, doesn’t it? Quite at odds with the circumstances.
He was on patrol when someone tripped the audible alarms on his perimeter. Loid advanced to find an enemy soldier – none other than Franky Franklin! He was a sniveling, starving mess. Seems he had deserted. He begged Loid for food. Loid said he wouldn’t waste food on a dead man. He raised his rifle to put poor Franky in the grave.
Franky begged for his life. When he saw that wasn’t working, he made it very clear why he still wanted to live. “I don’t wanna die without even dating a woman once!” he said (08:06).
I think that was the first time Loid had smiled since the bombing. That was after he got over the initial shock, of course.

He still needs practice lying. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: You’re a Higher Class Reader
Before I ask you if you remember the very first episode of this series and how it relates to my favorite moment, I want to write a general note about this episode. It’s easy to say war is evil. It’s likewise easy to show puppies, or dolls, or other disproportionately important objects being destroyed to get the point across.
The idea is that showing the Big Bad stepping on a flower or a teddy bear is more effective than showing them murder actual children. It’s a good thing, I think. But it’s become cliche. What that implies is that it’s difficult to convey how bad war is. I could say the “horrors of war,” but that, too, had been used so often it’s become a cliche.
This episode managed to convey what makes war something to avoid, and it did so in a dramatically effective way. I mean, come on – showing Loid’s friends had been alive all along, only to “correct” that oversight moments later? Talk about pouring salt into the wound created by the twisting knife!
This stung a bit. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I go rift off war, and its terror, and its inadvisability, especially in light of current events. But what’d be the point? This is an anime site. I’m not going to say that it doesn’t matter what I say here (though, one could argue that point with some effectiveness!). But I think if you visit this site with any regularity, it’s unlikely you take war lightly. I think more highly of you. So I’m going to set that topic aside.
My favorite moment is the dramatic fruition of my favorite moment from episode 1. In that episode, I found it remarkable how Loid put his operation in jeopardy to save Anya from kidnappers. She had reminded him of his purpose – “To create a world where children won’t have to cry… That’s why I became a spy”, is how he had put it (18:01, in episode 1).
Delivery: Loid Still Needs to Practice His Lying
In this episode, we saw Loid lose his childhood, his parents, and his friends. We saw him spare the poor dude who hadn’t dated yet. The narrative drove him to the point of despair. But Loid didn’t despair, did he?
The recruiter grabbed the satchel containing his worldly possessions and tossed them into a flaming barrel (18:27). The idea was to give Loid a completely new start. His recruiter said that he would not become an intelligence asset for his country. Loid let slip that he didn’t really care about who won the war.
You’d think saying something like that to a spy would be a problem, wouldn’t you? Nope. The guy seemed to have his own secrets. But he did ask Loid why he was doing this, then. Why dedicate himself to gathering intelligence – data, the most precious war materiel – for his country.
At that moment, a group of laughing children happened to frolic by. Loid didn’t look at them. In fact, he kept his gaze on the ground in front of him. They passed; he closed his eyes.
“No particular reason,” he finally said (19:03).
He wasn’t buying it. Or rather, he knew better. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Apparently satisfied, the recruiter replied, “Follow me, you little liar.”
War had taken a lot from Loid. But it hadn’t yet destroyed him. There remained within him a core dedicated not to some political abstract, but a physical, tangible reality. I found his dedication, and his essential goodness, inspiring. After all, it had endured through a lot.
If you want a definition of what a man is, you could do a lot worse than following Loid’s example.
What did you think of Loid first meeting the recruiter? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!

I loved this episode. The character development through the war was awesome. You’re right, this episode showed better than any of the previous episodes, that after all that Loid has been through, he’s still a good person. I think my favorite part of this episode was Loid meeting Franky. Franky was a goofy guy even back than.
His meeting with Franky was great. There Franky was, just tossing out facts and stuff, which is more or less exactly what I expected. Then came my favorite quote!
Thinking more about it, I wonder if he and Fiona might make a decent couple. She’s hopelessly, head-over-heels in love with Twilight, but Franky might treat her right. And she could always adjust his attitude if he tried to stray!
