SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 41 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 41, “Behind the Scandal | The Path to an Imperial Scholar,” a famous opera singer, Jonas Wellman, visits Westalis to give a concert, ostensibly to improve relations. Sylvia Sherwood’s cell receives the order to make sure the visit goes well. But between a green agent and a rapidly developing situation, her cell is challenged to ensure Wellman’s safety. Will she have to go into the field herself? Can she rely on her inexperienced agent to back her up? And when will Loid/Twilight recover from Anya’s second Tonitrus Bolt?

Favorite Quote from SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 41

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 41: Anya's ignorance is bliss

Anya’s confidence was based on something other than a clear memory. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

It’s always fun to see Henry Henderson in action. He’s a good-hearted man whose dedication to elegance, especially in contrast to the brutal world that Loid inhabits, is an uplifting inspiration. So is his dedication to his vocation, which is teaching children. Like Anya.

Gotta admire someone who can not run away screaming from that challenge.

That dynamic gave me my favorite quote this week, and it’s a duet between Mr. Henderson and Anya. Anya’s bus was late, and the other kids had friends or interests that took them away from the bus stop. That left Anya alone. Mr. Henderson saw her and, to keep her from feeling lonely, asked if she would help him carry some books.

As they walked, Mr. Henderson said she could talk to her friends, or to him, if she had any troubles and needed help.

“It’s okay. Anya is on a roll right now,” she said confidently (15:34).

Mr. Henderson, shocked, thought, “All the students who received Tonitrus Bolts the other day lost some hope, but she’s still holding up after receiving her second one! Miss Forget, you are positively elegant!”

Anya could read the guys’ thoughts. Her reaction? “Anya forgot that she got a Tonitrue Bolt! Completely!”

Ignorance really is bliss, I guess!

Favorite Moment from SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 41

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 41: Sylvia Sherwood is dangerous with a belt

One almost feels sorry for the guy. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Teachers Have it Rough

It was a treat for me to see Sylvia Sherwood in action this week. Outside of the main cast (including Yor), she’s my favorite character. If you’ve read even a handful of my posts, you can guess why: she’s smart, she’s strong, and she’s attractive.

This episode added a couple more traits, and you can see the second one in my favorite moment. The first is how dedicated she is to her teaching role. She had a green agent in her office who kept spouting nonsense. He’d draw conclusions from propaganda; he made sweeping statements, including crowd side and number of sources for a story.

“Did you actually count how many?” she asked him (04:01) in an apparently vain attempt to get him to reflect on his technique. Meanwhile, the more experienced, older agent kept his comments to himself. He seemed to know what she was doing and wanted to see how the newbie would respond.

She tried logic – it was only partially effective against this guy. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

She didn’t give up on the guy. In fact, you could view my favorite moment as a way of teaching the newbie. They got a call that an ex-soldier, Pance Karmer, intended to murder the singer, Jonas Wellman. Ms. Sherwood noticed a suspicious guard in the television footage near the singer’s hotel, and she sprang into action. She took the green agent with her.

Delivery: Sylvia Sherwood and the Belt of Doom

They arrived in time to find Karmer, armed with a pistol, trying to get closer to the singer. Dressed in her business suit (including high heels), she advanced on the man. She didn’t have a weapon of her own, so she improvised: she used her belt.

Though, given her skill in using it, it might actually have been her weapon of choice (almost like a Shaolin whip or a cloth version of a chain whip). First, she knocked the pistol out of Karmer’s hand (10:39). When he whipped out a knife, she smacked him with the belt buckle so hard in the face that he rotated at least once on the way to the ground.

At least, he would have hit the ground. Her team, the newbie and the experienced agent, caught him first. But only after the newbie observed that the man’s jaw was most definitely broken. After double-checking that the guards and the singer had not noticed them, they scampered away.

I had to laugh at how obvious they were checking to see if the guards observed them. Their under cover agent did his job well! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Not only is Ms. Sherwood smart, strong, and attractive. She’s combat effective in the field. That’s a particular set of skills, you know. And she’s good at passing those skills along. Not only can she talk the talk; she can most definitely walk the walk. SPY x FAMILY has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to characters, and it’s one of the things that keeps me interested in the series.

What did you think of Wellman’s ultimate reason for wanting to defect? What were your favorite moments? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
