SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 45 – Quick Summary
In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 45, “Take Down the Busjacker,” the standoff between the terrorists, the local police, and the state police continued. Anya kept picking up bits and pieces of mental traffic, but she had a hard time doing anything with the information for fear of giving herself away. Meanwhile, the state police, intent on a rapid resolution that would involve lots of gunfire, pulled more and more political strings. It’s only a matter of time before they seize the initiative. Is there anything Anya can do? Can Yuri find the other bus? And when will Yor consider Anya overdue?

Anya knew the state police’s armed forces were closing in. She knew the crazier of the terrorists would blow up the bus rather than let them get boarded. Anya, little Anya who could read minds, knew she had to act.
She jumped out of her seat and approached the terrorists. Bravely, she opened her mouth to speak. And nothing came out, because she realized if she said what she’d intended, the crazier of the terrorists would push the button.
Panicked, she thought that maybe, just maybe, appealing to a meal time would work. No idea why. But that’s what Anya’s little brain came up with. She said (15:24). “A-Anya is already hungry again, so she would like her next snack, please.”
That’s not my favorite quote. It’s what Henry Henderson said that’s my favorite quote. Though everyone was shocked, Henry voiced his concern most clearly when he thought (15:34), “Steel… nay, tungsten! She has nerves of tungsten!”
Do you know what’s funny? He was right. She acted in spite of the danger to herself to protect everyone. She did the best she could in spite of the danger. That’s as good a definition of “nerves” as I’ve heard!

Setup: A Little Too Real
Before getting into my favorite moment, I want to acknowledge how SPY x FAMILY has always done a good job of dramatizing shades of gray. This week, the catalyst for that portrayal was Biddy Squire, the daughter of Red Circus’s leader, Billy Squire.
The guy’s a terrorist. That should be one of those “full stop” things. In our world, we tend to treat it as such. At least, until recently – which touches on this observation, as I’ll show in a second. But in the nuanced world of SPY x FAMILY, Billy had a reason for lashing out.
Years ago, his daughter, Biddy (Bridget), had involved herself in protests against illegal state kidnappings and illicit use of force. Sound familiar? It should – which is probably why this episode hit me so hard.
Her dad was understandably worried about her. He asked her to stop for her own safety. She said she wasn’t in the least bit afraid of dying. She went on to say (08:20), “I’m much more afraid to live in a world where you can’t say something is wrong when it clearly is!”

That got me to thinking. Maybe I’m naive, which is possible; maybe I’m optimistic, which is unthinkable, given who I am. But in that moment, hearing her say those words, it struck me that those in power who wish to use force to silence the facts haven’t learned a valuable lesson. Namely, that a nation built on freedom isn’t going to be terribly happy to give that up for worse than nothing.
Atrocities are atrocities, no matter the quality of the suit of the one issuing the orders.
Anyway. I don’t want to go down that path too far. I’m not sure how long my positive mindset will last! So, let’s look at my favorite moment. Back in episode 43, I said I was really looking forward to what happened when Yor found out about the kidnapping.
Delivery: Fun with Redirection
Well, in this episode, we found out. But not really.
We had a quick scene of Yor calling the school to learn that the field trip had run long. Then we had a shot of Yor talking to Sharon, whose child also went to Anya’s school. She said that the field trip had been cancelled – evidence that the school was covering up what was going on, depending on who they talked to.
Yor seemed poised to go into action.
Later, the craziest of the terrorists tries to make a getaway. Foiled when the tire-less bus crashes into the armored vehicles, he grabs Anya (who had hilariously slid down the aisle to the front of the bus) and sprints from the bus. The disgusting dude tried to use Anya as a human shield.
We had a quick shot of someone – a female figure – dashing by the camera. I’m all like, “Yea! Yor’s here!”

Then the show decided to yank that rug out from under me. Leaping into the air and brandishing a taser, Martha Marriott dropped the terrorist and caught Anya before she could bounce off the pavement (21:13).
“Becky’s lady!” Anya said by way of thanks (21:15).
The show tricked me. I think it intentionally tricked me. It promised me a Yor beat down. Instead, it gave me a Martha surprise. And I’m not even mad. Mathra showed up with Becky’s dad, so we knew she was there. We just didn’t know how capable she was. Turns out, she’s quite capable – which was fortunate for Anya!
