SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 44 – Quick Summary
In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 44, “The Red Circus,” Anya, Becky, Damian, and their classmates found themselves hijacked by a terrorist group called Red Circus. The terrorists had hijacked their bus and were driving them to places unknown. Anya might be able to help, since she can read the terrorists’ minds. But if she does, how would she explain that to her classmates? If she doesn’t, will the police or, worse, the state secret police, take action? And just want do the terrorists want?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Damian wasn’t quite as happy about it as Anya was. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Fortunately for Anya’s mental health, she could read the lead terrorist’s mind. She went from being dazed with terror and mumbling (11:43) “Anya’s head… is gonna be choppy-chopped” to being very chill.
I’m not sure the circumstances objectively justified that change, but I certainly get how she’d be relieved. Even to the point of being giddy!
The other kids didn’t know the bomb was fake, though. Damian, bless his heart, decided he wanted to a) appear brave in front of the other kids and b) protect Anya. Anya’s “bravery” had impressed him, and he wanted to do something for her. So, he offered to wear the bomb instead.
It was a good plan. It just didn’t account for the terrorists having more than one fake bomb. Shocked, now sporting a fake bomb of his own, Damian staggered back to his seat.
Smiling, Anya said (14:26), “Aw, we match!”
Damian didn’t take it in the spirit intended!
Favorite Moment from SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 44
Anya didn’t want Damian to be scared. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Damian Stepped Up
Is it just me, or did Crunchyroll switch the episode numbers this week? Last week, I watched episode 43. This week, I watched S3 E7. I used the numbering scheme you see above because I was trying to follow Crunchyroll’s example. Weird.
I’ll tell you what: Becky and Damian both impressed me in this episode. Both kept their cool. When Anya initially melted down, Becky rubbed her shoulders until she calmed down. Even Damian, not knowing the bomb was fake, resolved to try to make a positive difference.
Both of them showed real bravery in the face of a scary situation. For Becky, one might argue that she showed such bravery without a real idea of what she was doing. She had probably been sheltered, and she spoke of how confident she felt that her dad would come after her. So her actions might reflect a lack of understanding.
Becky doesn’t scare easily. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
But not Damian. He tried to adjust to the idea that his actions had not saved Anya. He also had to recover from his reaction to Anya’s observation that they matched – and her apparent glee at the fact. As he worked through those things, the implications of what he had done dawned on him.
He realized that if the head terrorist was in a bad mood, he might well lose his head. Literally (remember: he didn’t know it was fake). It was funny when he thought (15:00), “I’m pretty sure I can’t become a politician if I don’t have a head, right?”
Delivery: So Did Anya
Comical, yes! But it gets the idea across that Damian’s trying to grapple with what he’d done – from the perspective of a child his age. His emotions crashed. He felt like me might lose his composure. He struggled to hold himself together even as he admitted his fear.
That was hard to watch.
My favorite moment was Anya’s reaction. She could read the little dude’s mind. She’s a kind-hearted soul, and she didn’t want him to be scared. So she reached out, took his hand (15:25), and said, “It’s okay. Don’t be scared.”
The kid gets points for not freaking out completely. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Damian might have been embarrassed and reacted like a little boy trying to prove he really wasn’t scared. But Anya’s sincerity literally brought tears to my eyes. Here’s a secret: the whole point of watching fiction is to encounter moments like this. It’s to react emotionally to a character or a scene. Cultivating the ability to react like that is critical to maturity. Suppressing it is a sign of immaturity and a lack of courage.
This show just gave me the kind of moment that I watch fiction hoping to see. This was a good day! What did you think of Yuri’s reaction to realizing how Yor would react to Anya coming to harm? What were your favorite scenes? Let me know in the comments!

The moment when Anya was happy that she and Damien matched was pretty darn cute! Of course, I don’t think anyone else on the bus would want to have a matching bomb. Poor Damien, Anya can’t tell him it’s fake without revealing her secret, so he’s left panicking and she’s just fine.
Wasn’t that great?
And I really enjoy how the show portrays Anya as she tries to figure out how to warn people about things she can’t possible know about — without reading minds, that is! I thought it might get old, but so far, it hasn’t!
