SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 47 – Quick Summary
In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 47, “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing,” the teacher Thomas Austin experienced the shakes and nightmares after the busjacking incident. At Henry Henderson’s recommendation, Thomas visited the world-renounced psychiatrist Loid Forger. Can Loid help Thomas restore his equilibrium? Meanwhile, Yor helps out at work, and her coworkers take her to dinner to say thanks. Dinner – with alcohol. Will the restaurant survive a drunk Yor? If it does, will Loid when Yor eventually gets home?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.
Favorite Quote from SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 47
I admired Yor’s enthusiasm. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Do you remember when Damian gave me my favorite quote back in episode 17? I didn’t. Until this episode, anyway!
Yor’s friends had no idea what kind of danger they risked, for themselves and for the restaurant, when they gave Yor alcohol. But they found out! Yor and Sharon had helped Millie and Camilla finish their work when the big bosses went out drinking. So, they took Yor and Sharon out for dinner.
Yor, of course, was anxious about making a good impression. She wanted to appear completely normal. The trouble was, “normal” is a concept that Yor has only met on paper. She’s never lived it. So, when she heard her coworkers using colloquial terms for murder to refer to their own relationships, Yor’s drunk brain thought it had come up with a way to blend in.
Camilla said she wished her boyfriend would get more “cutthroat” to get ahead.
Yor saw her chance and said (13:09), “God damn it! Exactly! You gotta cut dem throats for victory!”
She said the first part in English. Just like Damian had done. And just like when Damian had said it, I laughed, literally out loud.
And still, I have no idea why that’s hilarious!
Favorite Moment from SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 47
Loid makes a great psychiatrist. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I think it’s just me, but I’m getting the tiniest bit impatient with the status quo. The busjacking was a welcome, dramatic diversion. But I think I’d like to see Loid and Yor grow closer. Sure, flirting like they did just before the end credits was enjoyable. Of course Loid caught her when she almost keeled over! But it’s been 47 episodes, and to the two of them, this is still fake.
Mostly.
Well, like I said, it could just be me. Patience and I don’t get along very well. But I do know an intelligent position when I see it. In another world, it might be called enlightened. But that word has become overloaded. I suppose “intelligent” has, too. But I’ll use it here to just mean an intellectual position that aligns with facts.
Thomas didn’t want to visit Loid. The guy was, to say the least, conflicted. He even told Loid that (02:42), “As embarrassing as it is to admit, I feel that the busjacking incident the other day may still be affecting me.”
Now, why would he feel embarrassed? If I fall off a ladder and shatter my leg, I might feel embarrassed for being so clumsy. But I wouldn’t feel embarrassed for going to the emergency room and saying, “Check out the bone stickout out of my leg. We should probably fix that!”
Thomas put on a brave face, but he felt embarrassed to even be there. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
But poor Thomas felt embarrassed that he had what was probably post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Okay, he really didn’t – at least not from the busjacking. But that’s beside the point. My favorite moment is how Loid responded.
“It was a terrifying incident,” he said in a calm, matter-of-fact voice (02:51). “What you’re experiencing is perfectly normal. Notions such as ‘You’d be fine because you’re an adult’ or ‘You have a weak mind’ are absolutely false.”
Loid’s a spy, but he’s also a damned fine psychiatrist. I wish we’d get passed the idea that mental illnesses are anything other than illnesses – and are certainly not defects of character. Given everything else going on in the world, I think we still face an uphill fight. But it’s worth it.
What did you think of the real cause of Thomas’s affliction? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
