SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 48 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 48, “Extreme Level 3 Situation,” a hungover Yor took the advice of her office friends and declared her gripe about Loid to his face – just as her brother Yuri burst in. As Loid tried to figure out why Yor was unhappy, he got an emergency call from the hospital that turned out to be related to his role as Twilight. A defector had taken secret plans to the other side, and those plans included the locations and identities of WISE’s agents. Including Loid. Can Loid, Fiona, and their team retrieve the plans? Or is Loid about to have a bigger problem than drunk Yor misunderstanding her friends?

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 48: Yor was very happy that her general dissatisfaction is only one day old

Yor seemed very happy about it. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Yor’s friends, most of them anyway, are not great influences on her. Millie and Camilla in particular seem to have given Yor false expectations. It was so bad that when Yor woke up in the morning, still feeling a bit drunk, she still had their ideas in her head.

One of those ideas? That all married couples had gripes about each other. Yor’s brain translated that into: good marriage = gripes.

The problem was, she didn’t have any gripes. So, she concluded she was not being a good fake wife to Loid. So she decided to make something up. As Yuri burst in to visit, without bothering to knock first, Yor blurted out that she was unhappy with all aspects of their relationship.

Yuri jumped on that and demanded Loid apologize. Loid had no idea what was going on. Remember, he’s a logical man, and he needed data So, logically, he asked Yor if she had been unhappy for a long time. He hoped to use the timeframe to figure out what had made her unhappy.

“Oh, no,” she said happily (05:18). “Just since yesterday.”

From Yor’s still lightly drunk brain, that made perfect sense. But even Yuri couldn’t grasp what she was talking about.

Setup: Viewers (Like Me!) Can Be Confused

In my review of the previous episode, I said I was getting impatient with the status quo. And lo and behold (does anyone use that phrase anymore?), we get this episode that blows things up. And how, I have to say, I miss the status quo!

How fickle can I be?

I guess it’s not the status quo per se that I miss. It’s the lack of danger to Yor and Loid. Because at the end of the episode, it could be that things look bad for Loid. Or maybe not, because the show’s really good about feints and intentional miscues.

I find what I really want is to see Yor and Loid and Anya get together as a real family and finally have some place to belong. But from a narrative perspective, that’s not possible until some of these other issues enjoy some kind of resolution.

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 48: The stakes went up

Seems like the stakes went up considerably. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

That’s me in reader/viewer mode. It clearly illustrates why writers don’t listen to readers/viewers. As a reader/viewer, I really don’t know what I want all the time!

This episode had a lot of interesting little moments. I can’t point to one that hit me particularly hard, so I’m going to pick one I thought was a little funny while offering an interesting insight into Yor’s character.

Loid had just gotten the call to come into the hospital. We now know about the problem with the double agent whose information put Loid, Fiona, and their entire organization in danger. After he left, Yuri saw an opportunity to drive a wedge between Yor and Loid. Yuri encouraged her to come with him to tail Loid – in the hopes they would catch him cheating.

So they tailed him. I laughed when Yuri said that tailing “civilians” without them knowing was super easy. And, of course, Loid was completely aware of them! As they approached the hospital, Yuri got recalled to duty, so he had to leave Yor alone.

She managed to follow Loid all the way to the hospital. She realized he had been telling the truth; the hospital had really called him in. By now, she was completely sober. How do we know? The screen added a helpful note (10:16), “She finally sobered up.”

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 48: Yor discovered Loid wasn't cheating

Yor realized Loid wasn’t cheating. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

She realized Loid not having an affair meant she could not complain/gripe about him cheating on her. Then she thought about what she was saying. As the “she finally sobered up” notification displayed, she thought to herself (10:!6), “Of course it’s better if I have nothing to gripe about.”

I often think of Yor as a kind-hearted person who’s just not that bright. I forget that she’s very, very bright on her home turf. Awareness of her inner, emotional self is not her home turf. That’s why I like this moment so much. It shows Yor developing the kind of awareness she hadn’t shown very often. Character development is cool. Also, I have gotten to really like Yor, and I want to see her end up in a good place.
