SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 49 – Quick Summary

In SPY x FAMILY Season 3 episode 49, “Battle to the Death in the Sewers,” Loid found himself on the defensive. His enemies had set a trap for him. Though he had prepared, he soon found himself in the sewers facing off against the last person he wanted to fight. Can he regain the initiative? Can Nightfall and the rest of the team find him before it’s too late? And just how strong is this Wheeler guy, anyway?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 49: Yor accidentally made Yuri really resilient to damage

Someone developed quite a lot of strength growing up under Yor’s supervision! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Loid’s spy performance usually comes across as practically super human. Honestly, I can see someone who’s just that good perform just that well. It’s fun to watch most of the time! In this episode, though, we got to see that he’s not all machine. Despite what he might want to think.

In the sewers, when he realized he confronted Yuri, he froze. I don’t think it was out of mercy because he knew the guy. I think it’s because he cares about Yor. Loid did not want to kill Yor’s brother. So he pulled his punches.

He shot Yuri’s pistol out of his hand – but not before taking a round in the upper arm. He used Sylvia Sherwood’s right in Yuri’s throat to put him on the ground. Loid thought that had done it. But no, Yuri attacked Loid from behind with a pipe. Loid punched him in the gut; he got up. Loid chopped him in the neck, rammed an elbow in his back, and kicked him in the family jewels.

Yuri got back up.

“How’s he so resilient?” Loid wondered (07:20). “Is this what happens when you’re raised by Yor’s violen… er, love and affection?”

That’s not even factoring in Yor’s cooking! Yuri’s a tank. Loid had to resort to a pipe upside the guy’s head to knock him out!

SPY x FAMILY Season 3 Episode 49: Fiona proved just how passionate she is about Loid

Wheeler fooled around and found out. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Spycraft Takes Skill

I loved the subtle comparisons of the spycraft skilllevel in the principles in this episode. First, think about the effort Loid went into preparing the meeting site. He hid traps and snares; he came prepared with a machine gun briefcase! He was in control even when the meet went south.

His situation eventually went south, but even then he had a backup plan – dress up like Yuri.

Now check out what Yuri did. He figured out that someone, probably Twilight, was pretending to be him based on a footprint. Cool. Then, when he descended into the sewers, he told his boss that (03:56) “It’s not like him to leave footprints behind. It’s proof he’s panicking.”

Want to know what I wrote in my notes? “Or setting a trap.”

Yuri was experienced and had decent judgment. But he wasn’t on Twilight’s level.

Now consider Fiona. She identified Wheeler because he looked back to the man he was tailing despite the car accident. “If you had worn darker sunglasses, I never would’ve noticed your gaze,” she thought (11:17). Then, to prove she wasn’t all bravado, she added, “To be fair, you probably didn’t have time to properly prepare.

Fiona kept her wits about her and calmly analyzed the situation in real time. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream

She and Twilight are consummate professionals. They know their jobs; they have experience. And yet, both of them almost died in this episode. Turns out Wheeler was a more formidable enemy than they knew.

He also made a profoundly stupid mistake. But, like Nightfall, I have to cut the man some slack. He didn’t know he was up against Nightfall and her love for Loid.

How much does she love the man? “He’s right, Nightfall,” she thought, “he” meaning Loid (14:29). “This is a battle to protect peace between the East and West — to protect Twilight’s dream.” She believed in so much she was willing to sacrifice herself to see his dream come true. I respect that. It brought a tear to my eye, in fact.

Delivery: Yes, Fiona Really Does Love Loid

But it wasn’t my favorite moment. Nor was Fiona dreaming what it would be like to die in Loid’s arms, or her elaborate daydream about taking over operation STRIX. My favorite moment came just after Nightfall coming upon Wheeler as he was about to unmask and murder Twilight.

How much does she love Loid? Enough to drop her gun and physically destroy it when Wheeler said he’d spare Loid if she did so. But Wheeler thought that being a lone wolf meant being strong. He thought that relying on just himself meant he was powerful. He forgot not only hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution.

He didn’t understand the motivations of the woman in front of him.

Wheeler had no idea what he was up against. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

So when he hauled Loid up to finish him anyway, Nightfall showed the speed she used to nearly return Yor’s tennis serve back in episode 23 and cross the space between the two of them so quickly he couldn’t mentally react. All he could do is try to block her punch.

She put everything she had into that strike. She put so much power into that single attack that she shattered his arm, drove it into his face, and sent him tumbling, unconscious, across the cement. She also shattered her arm in at least 4 places. The arm shattered so badly that as she gazed on Wheeler’s fallen form, her eyes more like those of an angry death goddess, her arm hung useless at her side (21:48).

Fiona put her all into that punch. How could I not choose that as my favorite moment?
