Synduality Noir Episode 8 – Quick Summary
In Synduality Noir episode 8, “Pure Dream,” Katana asked Ellie to go on a date. What he didn’t tell her is that they’d have company. That wasn’t the only unusual thing. Kanata had gotten tickets to an event from Tokio – who suddenly seems flush with cash! That was the unusual thing! Where’s he getting all of the money? Will Ellie ever get a moment alone with Kanata? And why is Ciel the only one not in the party?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Kanata seemed a bit freaked out there in the background. Capture from the Hulu stream.
I’m still trying to figure out just how human-like the Magus are. Visually, at least at the level of resolution that anime offers, they look human – except for the neck hardware. They seem to interact in human ways. Though it seems that some are more human than others.
Take Flamme, for example. She seemed perfectly able to swim in the pool, just as any human would. Noir, on the other hand…
She dove off the edge of the poor with good form. She reminded me of a professional athlete, in fact. But then she killed that illusion. She sank to the bottom and hit with a clank.
On the surface, Ange came up to Ellie and said, “I guess the swimming-mode plug-in hasn’t been installed.”
And I’m still not sure how a Magus compares to a human!

Kanata’s words had encouraged Ciel. Capture from the Hulu stream.
Setup: Ellie Can’t Catch a Break
I really feel bad for Ellie. She’s an earnest young woman, and she just wants a few minutes alone with Kanata. That’s a) apparently too much to ask for and b) destined to be interrupted in the most unusual ways.
As an example, it appears that not only does Noir not have the swimming-mode plug-in installed. She doesn’t have the tsundere-detection plug-in, either. She completely misunderstood the episode’s earlier antics when she came to Kanata’s “rescue.”
Or… she only brought a water pistol, didn’t she? Is it possible Noir does understand the situation? Maybe she showed up just when Kanata was about to kiss Ellie (or, given Kanata’s personality, it’s probably more accurate to say that she was going to kiss him) intentionally? Is Noir really staking her claim?
Noir can’t sense tsundere-mode. Or can she? Capture from the Hulu stream.
I’m reading too much into this, aren’t I?
Well, regardless, the show’s given me some pleasant and upbeat favorite moments. This episode continues the streak. It did a good job generating a little mystery around Ciel not being with the other women-folk. So when she showed up, it was an “Oh, that’s where she was” moment. It was also a decent concert. The show’s music has a good track record of entertaining me.
Delivery: But Ciel Can!
After the show, Ciel told Kanata that Tokio had designed the show, and even her costume. Apparently, he’s become her manager, which is why he’s flush with cash. Kanata said he was surprised she agreed to work with the guy.
“What are you saying?” she asked with a smile (14:53). “You’re the one who inspired me to go for it… When you said you liked my music, my dream bubbled to the surface again.”
Ciel surprised Kanata. Capture from the Hulu stream.
Yep. Just a passing comment, isn’t it? But it made me reflect: we never know what impact our words will have. In this case, the impact was positive. In Ellie’s case, the guilt of disparaging Kanata’s dream when they were kids haunted her. On the whole, I prefer positive impacts. I’ve started trying to say something positive (and honest) in regular conversations. I get distrusting looks at times, but at the very least, it helps me keep the possibility of the positive in mind.
Because I’ll tell you what: this world makes it hard as hell to stay positive! Every little step helps.
What did you think of Noir intercepting Ellie and Kanata’s kiss? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Ellie actually got a little forward movement on things with Kanata! Finally! It didn’t quite go as far as anyone hoped just yet, but forward is forward. And it’s surprisingly rare in anime these days, ya know?
How Magus differ from humans, summed up: Magus are androids, ie, man-made robots that look like humans.
Ellie stepping up is kinda rare, isn’t it? I liked to see it. Ellie’s one of my favorite characters, and I’d like to see her do well.
I get the series wants a Magus to be an android or something similar. But the narrative isn’t consistent. The reaction to Kanata suggesting a Magus was his mother was surprise/shock, but not disbelief. So I can’t tell if a Magus is “simply” an android, or a hybrid artificial/biological being.
And I completely admit that I might be reading too much into the reaction — the intent might have been to show disbelief.
