The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10 – Quick Summary
In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10, “Conscience does make cowards of us all. II,” Lucy wanted to get rid Seth as fast as possible, so she walked him out. Chise tagged along. They came up to Seth’s limousine, but the driver had left. Seth was taken aback. The driver should have waited to matter what! Then the reason for his disappearance showed up in the form of two iron-clawed assassins. With speed that allowed them to hurt even Ruth, they forced Chise to make a desperate decision. Or was Chise really doing the deciding?

I can’t blame Lucy for being upset. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Seth delivered Lucy’s mail. She didn’t want anything to do with the bank statement, but he convinced her to at least have a look. The amount of a million pounds astonished her.
She immediately accused Seth of having been involved in criminal activity. Whether he was or not depends on your point of view, I guess. He was the auctioneer who sold Chise, after all! Chise, for her part, didn’t seem to hold a grudge. In an amusing aside, she tried to figure out how Seth had dispersed the funds from her purchase.
Seth guessed what Chise was doing, and he made a shushing gesture so she’d keep it quiet. Lucy didn’t like that; she didn’t feel comfortable with Seth anyway, and seeing that Chise knew him from somewhere had to aggravate her. When Lucy asked about it, Chise didn’t help by answering that Seth had saved her, but the circumstances were a secret.
Grabbing Chise’s cheeks and pulling them sideways, Lucy said (03:22), “I’ve had it with this habit of your where you stop right before you’re about to say something! I’ll mess you up!”
It was heart-warming to see Seth watching from the background.

You can see the exact moment Chise made her decision. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Do you remember a time when Chise was indecisive and timid? I do. Over the course of the first season, I enjoyed watching her become more confident. That’s good and healthy, right? Lately, though… In this episode, we got to see her take decision making to a new level, and I’m trying to decide if it’s a good thing or not.
I grew up reading Dune, so I’m used to the idea of characters having to make terrible decisions. So when the assassins cornered Chise, Ruth, Lucy, and the injured Seth, I welcomed the dragon-arm persona telling Chise she knew what she had to do.
I’ll be honest: part of me struggles to find a reason to be angry with the dragon arm. Two more than capable assassins had targeted Chise and her friends. I think Chise’s more than justified in using lethal force in response. But that’s not really my favorite moment – though the discussion the dragon arm brings to the party is more than a little interesting. My favorite moment is how Chise prepared Lucy.
Chise pulled the dimensional curtain aside so she and her friends could escape into the shortcut that Elias had introduced her to back in episode 4. She knew the dog-things would guard their territory. But she didn’t quite know for sure how they would react to Lucy and Seth.
Chise’s becoming adept at making life-and-death decisions quickly. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Remember me mentioning terrible decisions? When Chise spoke, her tone told me she felt like she had just made one of those decisions. She said (09:29), “I’ll explain later. Close your eyes. Don’t say anything. No matter what.”
Lucy’s no stranger to those situations. She obeyed immediately – and she usually argues every step of the way.
This is my favorite moment because of how firmly Chise took command. I have no doubt the dragon arm influenced her. But Chise has grown a lot since we first met her. She’s turning into a capable young woman who’s able to take care of herself — and her friends. Well, as much as any mage is able to!
