The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 3 – Quick Summary

In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 3, “Birds of a feather flock together. II,” Chise and Elias decided to have lunch with several of Chise’s classmates. They were an eclectic bunch – some of whom weren’t even human! One of them, Zoe lvey, had to excuse himself before they were done eating. Chise could not sense any malice, but even Elias was concerned. Do all of her new friends wish her well? Why does Philomela Sargant always seem so tired? And why can’t Elias take a nap outside under the sky?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 3: Even Chise has trouble understanding Elias-isms

Elias is still working on expressing his feelings. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Chise and Elise were commiserating about how exhausting their first day in school had been. Little things, like Chise not knowing why Lucy seemed to be avoiding her or why Zoe had dashed off before they finished lunch, drained her. Also, both of them aren’t great with large groups of people.

Elias, thinking back on his day, said that he felt odd. Specifically, he felt like he wanted to rub his insides.

Chise was used to the kinds of things that Elias said. But this was a bit much even for her.

“Elias-isms are pretty obscure,” she said with a frown (15:54).

If she can’t understand him, I’m not sure who could! On the plus side, at least he’s trying to share his feelings with her!

Favorite Moment from The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 3

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 3: Chise was happy to do something for Elias

Chise felt delighted to have done something for Elias. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Chise Has Come a Long Way

It’s been a treat watching Chise grow. At the start of season 1, the circumstances of her life had almost broken her will. There was still a spark there, but it was buried deep down. Elias found her and took her out of her dark world, but that was only the first step in her journey.

We’ve seen her risk her life to save her friends and strangers. We’ve seen her try to teach human emotions to Elias. But even in those cases, I had a sense that while he really relied on her, she didn’t feel satisfied. She felt like she could do more. She wanted to do more.

In this episode, my favorite moment involves a gesture that, while small, was very important to both Chise and to Elias — but especially to Chise.

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 3: The idea came to Chise quickly

You can see the exact moment Chise got her idea! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

They had just been through their first day at school. It had been an exhausting affair. To someone like me who does not draw energy from crowds, I felt a strong sympathy with both of them as they tried to recover. That exhaustion is real, and Elias’ estate reminds me, in a small way, of my grandma’s farm near where I grew up. The peace in places like that is regenerative. Even without magic!

Shortly after my favorite quote (above), Elias tried to lie down on the grass. The attempt ended in complete failure. His horns got in the way! Chise considered for a moment, and you could see the exact instant an idea hit her.

Delivery: Chise’s Confidence Grows

She asked him to come to her. He did. The next shot is from Elias’ perspective. He leans back, and suddenly, he’s looking at the sky. Chise had placed his head on her knees such that his horns branched out to her left and right.

Did you see the delighted smile on her face? She felt pleased with herself for coming up with the idea. Even more, she could help Elias in a way no one else had. To prove that, he said in a wondering voice (16:28), “his might be the first time I’ve lied down facing the sky.”

When she heard what he said, her smile rivaled the sun.

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 3: Elias' reaction delighted Chise

It’s nice to see her so happy and care-free. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

It’s a small thing. But you know, that’s kinda what life’s made up of, isn’t it? On my deathbed, I won’t remember the any major political or technical battles I won at work. I doubt I’ll even remember my novels. Well, I might. But I’ll remember them after I remember moments like Chise and Elias just shared.

What did you think of Chise and Ruth getting abducted again? What were your favorite moments from this episode? Feel free to let me know in the comments.

  1. I don’t remember all the details of the first season from five years ago, but I remember where Chise started out and where she is now, and it fills my heart with joy to see it.

There are certainly dark clouds on the horizon what with the shadowy hallway meetings between faculty and the mere fact that Chise is a Sleigh Beggy carrying dual curses.

But she’s also the strongest and happiest she’s ever been, and if the ED is any indication, she’ll eventually befriend both Lucy and Philomena. That seems far away now, but I can’t wait to see how that happens.

Whatever the larger narrative ambitions of this show, it’s the beautiful characters that keep bringing me to the table.

    1. These characters are great, aren’t they?

Lucy and Philomena both seem like they could appreciate someone like Chise. Lucy might be able to teach Chise a thing or two about self-preservation, too!

Do you like the pacing? I do — it is slower than a lot of shows, but I find it gives the characters time to come more alive.

Please let me know what you think!
