The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 13 – Quick Summary
In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 episode 13, “Nothing venture, nothing have. I,” the academy students had to deal with a complete lockdown. Chise and her classmates learned that at least one of the implications was extra mandatory lessons – in self defense! It did not help her mood that the teacher was Fabio Zaccheroni. Was he on the up-and-up? Did he craft his lessons to help the students? Or did he have something else in mind?

They weren’t fooling anyone. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Would I be stating the obvious if I said that I don’t think we can trust Zaccheroni? The only question in my mind is whether he’s simply likes to torment people for fun, or if he’s part of the larger scheme. Though if Sigrid Wachmann nearby, he can’t cause too much mischief.
He put the students through a vigorous self-defense training class. Most of the students struggled, but Chise and Rian were ready for it. Chise’s inner dragon handled things for her, whereas Rian seemed like he just knew how to handle himself without any outside intervention.
Afterward, Zaccheroni asked how many of them were scared. Almost immediately, all of the students put up their hands – except for Chise and Rian. Looking around, either not wanting to stand out or not wanting to seem like braggarts, they slowly raised their hands.
“You two,” Zaccheroni said good naturedly (19:35). “Don’t lie.”
I’m pretty sure the other students weren’t fooled, anyway.
Favorite Moment from The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 13
She wasn’t feeling well herself; but she still expressed concern for Issac. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Tropes Work for a Reason
I feel like I’ve fallen for a cliche. The “poor suffering pretty girl” shouldn’t work on me. I’m a grown ass man. I should be beyond that kind of cheap appeal to my sensibilities. But, well, we can be honest among ourselves, right? I really like Philomela and her arc.
This episode made it even worse. What’s more appealing than the “poor suffering pretty girl?” Why, a “poor suffering pretty girl who takes step to overcome her difficulties herself”, that’s who! I got to see Philomela in that mode in my favorite moment.
It’s easy to feel sympathetic toward Philomela. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
The students had to defend themselves against Zaccheroni’s familiars. Many of the students struggled, especially Isaac. The guy is not designed for combat. Or at the very least, he’s not trained for it. He could barely put his opponent down – and that was only after it smacked him around quite a lot.
Philomela did better. She seems to know her way around hand weapons. While attacking, she almost seemed to be completely under the control of her subconscious. Afterward, she seemed physically ill – as if the effort to kill made her sick.
Delivery: Philomela Takes a Step Forward
Despite her own discomfort, though, she did something that I thought was awesome. But first, do you remember back to episode 12? When Philomela’s nasty grandmother showed up? Isaac was one of the students present. He was the one who grabbed Philomela’s hand (19:34) to pull her to safety. It was a sweet moment; brave, too, on Isaac’s part.
It seems like the act meant something to Philomela. Seeing Isaac sitting down, trying to recover from his fight, she shuffled up to him.
Isaac seemed surprised Philomela would check on him. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
“Are you all right?” she asked (16:54).
Do you remember her ever starting a conversation like that? I think she’s starting to open up, if only a little bit! Isaac’s reaction was sweet – he seemed flattered that she cared. I really want to see Philomela break free of whatever’s binding her right now. The trope got me invested in her. Now, I want to see her prevail – and this moment was a step in the right direction!
What did you think of Elias learning that he had friends? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!

I have been so anticipating this season! Chise has turned out to be a bit overpowered. Weapon? Who needs a weapon?
Me, too. So glad it’s back!
I’ve begun to really, really worry about Chise. I wonder what kind of price she’s going to have to pay for that arm? Maybe the scales are already balanced for a reason I’m forgetting (this show is really intricate that way), but if not, then she’s going to have to pay a high price!
I have to admit: seeing her take out the familiar with such confident moves was pretty cool.
