In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 episode 17, “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.,” yet another student succumbed to whatever is consuming the magical energy within the school. Chise was there when the student’s roommate brought him into the infirmary. Suddenly, the ailing student lunged towards Chise. What does the student want? Why does he suddenly act possessed? And what is Chise willing to do to defend herself?

Pretty intense scene when the ailing student, who had just arrived in the infirmary, lunged for Chise and tried to drain her magical energy, wasn’t it? He apparently got more than he bargained for (or whatever possessed him didn’t count on the body being so frail), because his arm ballooned out and would have burst.
At first, I thought the principal launched a thorned vine attack, but after rewatching it, the attack came from behind her – from Elias. Of course he’d react instantly to a threat to Chise. Elias was able to neutralize the threat and even caught Chise as she fell, drained of energy.
Elias knew exactly what to do to help. He asked the principal if she had any food high in calories. Completely unsurprised by such a question, she was equally matter-of-fact in her reply.
“Sure,” she said (07:03). “Will my snacks do?”
She then proceeded to bury Chise under a mountain of candy bars and other sweet snacks. I wish the principals back when I was in school were so well prepared! The principal had quite a selection to share with Chise!

The students have been cooped up for a while now. The stress is really starting to get to them. One in particular, Kevin Forbes, loudly declared that maybe they should go after the attacker.
Keep in mind that the public isn’t completely informed about the nature of the threat. Lucy reminded everyone of that – to the point of asking if Kevin was dumb enough to want to get killed. Lucy, being Lucy, just came out and said the guy was thoughtless for suggesting such a thing.
By now, they had an audience. Kevin couldn’t let the insult go unanswered. He said that Lucy was the sole survivor of her family, and because of that, she had every reason to hate sorcerers. He came out and accused her of being the culprit.

Beatrice gets points: she began to stick up for Lucy. But then everyone froze. Chise – the quiet, unassuming, wouldn’t-say-boo young woman – got up and stormed over to Kevin. She grabbed him by the lapels and got right in his face.
“There are some things you shouldn’t say,” she growled at him (18:45).
Having friends is a new experience for Chise. But she seems to be adjusting well, doesn’t she? She’s finding her own voice. She’s sticking up for her friends. In fact, one could almost interpret what Chise did as setting up Kevin like a volleyball for Lucy to spike him. Lucy certainly saw her chance. Her right-handed punch put Kevin on the floor. Which served him right.

The interaction with Alcyone and Elias is actually my favorite because despite it being so low-key, you can see she’s actually struggling with her identity and purpose as an artificial creation.
I also went with that as my favorite moment, or at least favorite quote. I love how it showed Alcyone struggling, as well as how much Elias had grown — and was willing to share! This series has a warm hearth!
I thought the arm inflated either because the amount of energy was so great it couldn’t be contained and/or it was a kind of energy that he couldn’t absorb. Chise isn’t a sorcerer or alchemist or even a normal magic-user. She has sleigh beggy magic plus dragon magic plus the curse of Cartaphilus.

That sounds about right! I was afraid the poor guy was going to lose his arm! Glad Elias acted so quickly. But yeah, thinking about Chise, who was a Sleigh Beggy to start with, then adding on all the other enormous sources of magic she’s added… glad she’s not arrogant! She could do real damage to society!
