The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 18 – Quick Summary
In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 episode 18, “Coming events cast their shadows before.,” it was almost Christmas, and Chise’s school was still in lockdown. That meant they had a lot of time to talk, which was how Chise accidentally let slip that she had seen one of Lucy’s most traumatic memories. Far from being angry, Lucy asked if Chise could help her see more details – maybe help her see something she had missed. Chise saw details all right! Did they help Lucy get closer to understanding who had attacked – and why? And will Philomela ever come out of her room?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

I hope Chise never turns to the dark side. She’d be a lethal villain. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Near the end of the previous episode, Chise accidentally let slip that she had read Lucy’s memories. Chise tried to hide it, but Lucy’s perceptive. She made Chise spill the beans. We didn’t get to see exactly what Chise said, because the scene cut to Philomela.
Fortunately, in this episode, we got to find out what happened after Chise explained herself. Lucy, surprisingly, didn’t seem angry. She tried to sum up what Chise had told her by summarizing it as (03:13), “You can dive into other people’s memories?”
Could Chise give a simple “yes” or “no” answer? Nope. She said (03:16), “I keep doing it by accident,” she said.
An amazing power – something others would kill for. Something others would dedicate their lives to mastering. And Chise just kind of blundered into it. She seemed to feel sheepish about it, at least!

I don’t think Chise expected Elias to agree so readily. And, you know what? She kinda looks like a hobbit in this shot. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Chise Wants to Help
Talk about a tense situation! Philomela, who I’ve felt sorry for all season, just ascended (descended?) to level of one of the Cthulhu Mythos deities. At least, that’s what her waving roots reminded me of – at least I think she has roots and not tentacles. Still, she was freaky and scary and other-worldly – exactly the kind of thing I look for in this show.
Oh, and she floated above the ground. Because what Cthulhu mythos deity wants to walk?
Though not physically present, Chise sensed the transformation. She had been talking to Alexandra when Its energy drove her to her knees. Ruth sensed her collapse and rushed to her side. Elias flowed to her, too. She told him what had happened: the book and its holder were on the move.
Chise, still weak, her voice faltering, said (17:52), “Elias. I want to help.”
Elias listened to Chise as she explained she wanted to help. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
He took her hand. Pulling it closer to him, he looked straight into her eyes and said (18:01), “All right. Let’s chase them together.”
His closeness and his ready acceptance of her offer seemed to touch her deeply. She blushed.
Now, in many other shows, that touching moment might have ended there. They’d go off and do heroic things and stuff in celebration of this new level of trust and interdependence in their relationship. But this is Chise. She’s too honest and, let’s face it, a little too flighty to let it rest.
Withdrawing her hand, she said (18:08), “R-really? I thought you were going to leave me here.”
Delivery: Their Relationship from Elias’ Perspective
I think there’s a case to be made that not all of her wanted to go. Fortunately, Elias showed his pragmatic side and said, “It’s going to come after you anyway, so we’re better off sticking together.”
Ruth nodded wisely.
This moment made me sit back and wonder how having Chise as a significant other seemed to Elias. She’s everything he’s called her before: his teacher and his student, for example. She’s the Sleigh Beggy.
But she’s also in constant trouble. She’ll risk her life to help her friends. That’s laudable, sure, but it has to be nerve-wracking for anyone who cares about her – like Elias. Is he all practical acceptance like he just showed here? Does he worry? Or is working out how he feels part of what he’s learning from Chise?
Elias said he and Chise would help their friends – together. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Is the answer, “All of the above?”
It was a touching moment. It was a brave moment. And it was a humorous moment. It was, in other words, a perfect Ancient Magus’ Bride moment. Now, I’m really looking forward to seeing what they can to do help Philomela. Because goodness knows, she needs all the help she can get!

At this point, Chise can’t really risk her life anymore. Cartophilus is immortal and she absorbed him. I don’t think the impact of this has sunk in to either her or Elias.
I hadn’t considered that. Between Cartophilus and the freaking dragon within her, I wonder if there’s anything that could seriously hurt her? Maybe the winter goddess, or someone on that level?
