The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 19 – Quick Summary
In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 episode 19, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.,” the creature Philomela had become asked – very politely – for the principal to lower the barrier so she could leave. Just in case nicely didn’t work, Philomela demonstrated that she was willing and able to consume the very flesh of all the students present. Some of the teachers, too. Will the principal give in? Will Chise and friends arrive in time to make a difference? And what did Morrígan want from Chise – and how far is she willing to go to get it?

Favorite Quote from The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 19
The principal thought she had the final word. Not quite… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
This is my favorite quote in terms of dramatic effect. While I admit to having a strong sympathy for what Liza Quillyn/the principal said, I can’t say that I’m enthusiastic about the way she said it.
The principal had just determined that Philomela had not killed anyone. Chise and her friends came up to announce they were going after Philomela. Even Lucy said so.
The principal said no way – the book had corrupted Philomela. The girl was a lost cause. That pissed off Chise. In no uncertain terms, Chise made that clear to the principal. Who didn’t take kindly to Chise’s tone. In retrospect, that might account for the severity of her reaction.
Because after saying she was responsible for the college, Quillyn lectured Chise on the folly of trying to help someone as lost as Philomela. She threw in a couple of false dilemmas, asking if Chise thought the principal should endanger everyone to save one soul intent on self destruction. She ended by grabbing Chise’s lapel and saying (08:18), “Chise Hatori, if you truly want to protect your friends, you’ll have to put away your pathetic, self-congratulatory sense of compassion.”
I think Chise struck a nerve – even if the principal had a point. That point, however, was not the final word on the subject.
Favorite Moment from The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 19
Elias gave Chise exactly the rationale she needed. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Chise’s Young, But Her Heart’s in the Right Place
From a strictly tactical perspective, I can’t disagree with Quillyn. Chise has a tendency to throw herself into every problem without a plan. It’s worked out, partly because she’s tough, partly because she’s the Sleigh Beggy and gets a lot of help from the neighbors, and partly because her friends are fiercely protective.
But even while I can’t disagree, I have to take issue with the principal getting in Chise’s face like that. Chise clearly wanted to help Philomela – that’s a good thing. And sure, Chise was a little mouthy about it. But what teen/young adult isn’t? Flexing your organizational authority certainly isn’t a great way to engender respect.
Fortunately, Elias was there to set things right with my favorite moment.
At this point, Chise probably expected Elias to side with everyone else telling her to be cautious. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
At first, I wondered why Elias just stood by as the principal so disrespected Chise. I figured that, maybe, as a sort-of member of the faculty, he hesitated to make waves. But that didn’t feel like something Elias would do.
He promptly burst my bubble of stupid. Elias gently turned Chise’s face towards him. He even patted her head and praised her, saying (08:18), “You would normally have darted off by now.” She should be rewarded, he said.
Delivery: Elias Supports His Bride
The principal didn’t like where the conversation was going, but she had precisely zero ability to do anything about it. Practically ignoring her, Elias said that this was a sorcerers’ school. But Elias and Chise? They weren’t sorcerers. They had their own view of the world; their own way of doing things.
So, right in front of the principal, Elias played the Mage card. He asked if Chise had made a contract with Philomela. I don’t know if Elias had anything in particular in mind, or if he just trusted Chise to come up with something. Either way, that was the wedge that Chise needed.
“I made a promise,” Chise said after thinking about it (10:04). “That we’d make potpourri together someday.”
Elias’ words helped Chise remember her promise to Philomela. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Elias said (10:12), “Then, as a mage, you’ll have to uphold that contract.”
It was almost like they had planned it all out. But I think Elias made it up on the spot, and Chise jumped at the chance he offered her. What’s more, I’ve always liked the idea of consequence as an integral property of magic. Words matter. Promises matter. In the world of Mages, they matter quite a lot. By tying into the real world, that concept makes magic more believable, at least to me. Also, it was just cool seeing Elias step up for Chise.
What did you think of Chise’s spell uttered just minutes after my favorite moment? What were your favorites things in this episode? Feel free to share in the comments!
