The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 22 – Quick Summary
In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 episode 22, “Give a thief enough rope and he’ll hang himself.,” Lizbeth “May She Rot In Hell” Sargant had missed her son Adam so much that she arranged to sacrifice the life of her granddaughter Philomela to bring him back. So far, the plan was working. The magical book that Lizbeth had given Philomela had taken control. The rite was underway. Can Chise, Isaac, and Lucy reach Philomela in time? Even if they can, is there enough left of Philomela to save? And just why was Elias holding Alcyone in such a threatening way?
Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Chise seemed to think it would help to point out that they were able to find all their pieces by themselves. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I love these little glimpses we’re getting into what it means to be Chise. In the previous episode, we saw how she’s all chill about her own memories – when Philomela was dismayed on Chise’s behalf. This episode, we got another little glimpse that put me on notice: Chise doesn’t see the world like I do. Or how sorcerers do.
As Philomela made her way into the basement, Lucy and Isaac regained consciousness. They were concerned at how slimy they felt. As they were trying to puzzle out what happened, Chise asked if they were okay. Everyone seemed fine, if a bit slimy. Seeing the strange tree that had taken over the room, Lucy asked what had happened.
Chise explained that Philomela’s possessor had been accumulating magic. When Philomela lost control, the magic had consumed them.
“We were disassembled for a moment,” she added in an almost cheerful voice (13:59).
It sounded like she was talking about something no more serious than getting an oil change. The world’s obviously a very different place from Chise’s perspective!
Favorite Moment from The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Part 2 Episode 22
Philomela needed help, and she took an important step. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Lucy Delivers a Kick in the Pants
Is there really any doubt what my favorite moment would be? The season has been building towards it since the beginning. Isaac encouraged Philomela to speak her mind. Though furious with Philomela, Lucy had the integrity and nobility to do the same. Chise is Chise, so of course she wanted what’s best for Philomela – even if she had to wrap the desire in selfish reasons for Philomela to even consider it.
Granny “May She Rot In Hell” Sargant has summoned the divinity that would consume Philomela. It was clear the poor granddaughter didn’t have long to live.
Philomela had given up – until she heard Chise call her name. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Growing desperate, Chise explained she couldn’t stop what was happening if iPhilomela wanted it to happen. So she asked pointed blank (19:29): “What do you want to happen to you?”
And still Philomela hesitated. Perhaps what Chise offered seemed too close to charity to be acceptable. Fortunately, Lucy stepped in and said (19:32), “Whatever! Just finish what you were about to say!” Isaac chose that moment to remind her: this was why they had followed her.
Delivery: Philomela Takes an Important Step
Lucy had just asked Philomela for something – and it was something that Philomela could give. Isaac’s words hinted at something Philomela couldn’t even understand, though it was something deeply human. Buoyed by Chise’s request, emboldened by Lucy’s, and warmed by Isaac’s words, Philomela found herself able to reevaluate her past. She went from recalling the quagmire of negativity surrounding Granny “May She Rot In Hell” Sargant to memories of people like Rian and his efforts to support her in his own special way.
Rian’s off-hand compliment meant a lot to Philomela. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Gathering her strength, becoming a little more bold in every instant, Philomela said (20:12), “If I may wish… Help me!”
Sure, it was cool seeing Chise, Elias, and Ruth defend Philomela. And it was also cool seeing Granny “May She Rot In Hell” Sargant dismayed. But seeing Philomela finally grab the reins of her own fate felt deeply satisfying. She needed a lot of help to do it, and in the end, sustained by her friends, she was able to pullit off. The payoff depends on the investment, and in this case, I loved how so much in this season invested to bring us this moment.
What did you think of Elias healing Alcyone? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

May She Rot In Hell’ comments “How could it be stopped by mere magic?” when Chise smashed her circle. She obviously doesn’t understand magic nor have a clue about the power that resides in Chise. Never mind Elias, who told her her to do it. Old hag you’re way out of your class here.
I love how you added in “May She Rot In Hell” for the hag. We’re all thinking anyway.
Man, she just ticks me off. Like, she’s so evil, that in many other series, I’d see her as a caricature, but given how sorcerers think and everything else this show has established, she’s believably that evil.
Man, I’m looking forward to seeing her get what’s coming!
