The Dawn of the Witch Episode 7 Review – Quick Summary

In The Dawn of the Witch episode 7, “I Can’t Save Anything,” Zero fainted during a training exercise intended to make sure that Holt, and by extension Cervil and Coudeau, learned the lessons from their recent failures. To his astonishment, Cervil could not use his magic to restore Zero’s depleted resources! What has changed? Meanwhile, Holdem arrived in the village for a surprise inspection. But we know he’s up to something more – but we don’t know exactly what! Does it have anything to do with the Remnants from the Disaster that Cervil encountered in the forest – and that almost cost him his life?

Favorite Quote from The Dawn of the Witch Episode 7

Cervil seemed surprised by the idea that he had had a father. That was really sad. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

We know that Cervil has lost the memories of his childhood. What memories have come back to him are bloody and terrifying, and I suspect that both Zero and Roux know more about his past than they’re letting on.

This episode brought to light an implication I had not considered about his memory loss. He had been talking to Zero about a book on botany. Noticing again that her eyes were so similar to his, recalling the moment they met in the rain (from the first episode), he asked if she knew his mother. Then she indicated that she knew his father, apparently very well.

“My father,” he said (09:21), seemingly shocked by the idea. “Oh, right. I have a father, too.”

I had considered that in general, he would not have known his parents, given his amnesia. But seeing his surprised at the very idea that he had had a father really drove home how isolated he must feel. I thought that was a good amount of work for such a simple quote!

Best in Show Moment for The Dawn of the Witch Episode 7

Zero felt comforted not only by knowing how Mercenary would react; but that he would react that way for her. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Quiet episode this week; more or less setting up the big show-down hinted at last week, towards the end when we saw Holdem bringing Bougyaku to the village. We know that Bougyaku has it in for Roux, Cervil, Holt, and Coudeau, so I can’t imagine it’s going to be a cordial reunion.

So this week, befitting a quiet episode, I’m picking a quiet favorite moment. The moment might have appealed to me because of my stage in life. While I certainly remember being a young man when I had some blood in my hormone stream, I found that the older I got, the more I appreciated forms of affection that were other than merely physical. It’s not that I appreciated the physical aspects less, just the other aspects, more.

I wonder if Cervil was taking notes? Because that’s one good way to approach a relationship! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Sometimes, it’s just pleasant to anticipate needs and fill them, without making a big deal of it. It seems that Zero and Mercenary have reached that stage, too. Zero had just collapsed, and Cervil had carried her to her room to recover. They heard someone downstairs. Someone large. Cervil saw Zero smile.

“He must have run here full bore the moment he was informed,” she said, smiling fondly (11:04). “But paused to catch his breath, and now intentionally ascends the stairs slowly. That’s just how he is.”

When he came into the room, he had calmed his breathing and tried to appear nonchalant. But Zero knew how much he cared and how worried he had been, and it comforted her. It’s nice to see quiet, mature little moment like this in a media filled with nose bleeds and furious blushes!
