The Eminence in Shadow Season 2 Episode 32 – Quick Summary

In The Eminence in Shadow Season 2 Episode 32, “Highest,” Mordred caused Ragnarok to emerge from the Black Rose. Mordred’s expectation was his dragon’s rampage would play out just as it had hundreds of years ago. But Mordred ran into a problem: Cid/Lord Shadow. Cid decided to take on the dragon. At first, Mordred was delighted. He would get a ring-side seat to witness the fall of Shadow Garden and its troublesome boss. But then he got distracted: Epsilon and other members of Shadow Garden decided to keep him company. How badly will things go for Mordred? Or will he do better than we expected?

This is what a beat down looks like in the planning stage. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

To file under “You know you’re in trouble when…”

I love seeing a bully run into a foe they expected to smack around – but who turned out to be in an entirely different class. Mordred seemed to honestly believe that he could slap around both Epsilon and Beta (I thought it was Victoria at first; I didn’t think that was Beta’s profile, but Victoria was there later, certainly). He had his fancy artifacts like a sword with an invisible blade. What could go wrong?

He was so confident that, even though he seemed surprised that Epsilon and Beta had dodged the first strike, he congratulated them for the evasion. That’s when Epsilon said she saw why he was known as the Knight Beyond Men.

Thinking she was coming around to his way of thinking, he started bragging about his fencing style – which relied utterly on an artifact (the sword) that no one else recognized. Until now.

“The Invisible Blade,” Epsilon said (02:59). “An ancient elven artifact that unleashes an unseeable sword.”

Not wanting to feel left out, and very much wanting to enhance the look of shock on Mordred’s face, Beta added (03:04), “Bragging about a stolen achievement… I suppose that’s par for the course for the Cult of Diablos.”

It was at that point that Mordred had to wonder if he had made a miscalculation.

Boom. On an astronomical scale. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Setup: Cid vs Anos Voldigoad

First, there’s going to be a movie. Yea! Second, Kage-jitsu! 2nd’s latest episode filled in some gaps in my understanding of this episode. Well worth 2 minutes to watch!

I want to put this out there for the sake of clarity: I had an absolute blast watching this episode. We got to see multiple beat-downs. We got satisfying character development. For perhaps the first time ever, we got to see Cid flex a bit – and if I interpreted what I saw correctly, we watched an entire solar system take damage. On top of that, we got some enthusiastic animation.

Oh, and that ending – talk about coming full circle! Man, that’s just good stuff.

What’s more cool than being OP in your world? Being OP in many worlds. Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Are you anticipating that I’m going to complain about how hard it is to pick a favorite moment? Well, I don’t blame you, because it was. But I’m going to skip that part (except for this not-so-subtle substitute!) and just dive right in.

I like OP characters if they’re handled right. Anos Voldigoad, for example, found an entertaining balance between raw power, humor, and dramatic impact. But it’s hard to get the balance right. If you’ve read any of my previous reviews of this series, then you know I think that Cid’s character hit a slightly different sweet spot: raw power, self-cluelessness, and wild misunderstandings all combined to make me look forward to this show more than most.

My favorite moment in this episode brings all of Cid’s coolness together in a single burst of awesomeness.

Seeing Epsilon and Beta smack Mordred around (and Victoria showed up at some point – that was a little confusing to me) was worth the price of admission. He was trying to be all “I’m the Knight Beyond Men and you’re just little girls” until he crashed into a bloody heap near Rose. That almost adjusted his overconfidence, but, well, never let it be said that he’s self-aware. He might rival Cid in terms of the ability to not see the obvious about himself.

But what was more fun was seeing Ragnarok fall like chunky rain all around Mordred. Now, that put a dent in his confidence. I’ll give Mordred a little credit. He had the presence of mind to merge with what was left of Ragnarok to become partly dragon himself – kinda a Ragnardred or something.

Delivery: Cid’s Astronomical Power

Yeah, sorry about that. But you get the idea. Rangardred did his bragging thing and tried to attack Cid. Ever see a cat play with an insect before nomming it? That’s what Cid did to Mordred’s new form. Cid hit him so hard it put him in orbit. Which was bad for Mordred for two reasons.

First, well, he’s in orbit. He lacks thrusters, re-entry mechanisms, and pretty anything else he needed to thrive in that environment. Second, it reminded Cid of why he started this adventure in the first place.

“The extreme I must surpass,” Cid said (15:54). “Seeing this place, feeling it, I realized again what I must do. I guess you’d call it ‘remembering why you started… And I owe it all to you. Thank you. So, this is it. I’m done playing.”

I think Cid actually put up a protective force field around the planet. That was my first clue that things were about to get energetic. Mordred seemed to sense something dreadful was about to happen, too. To him. In a panicked voice, he asked (16:19), “What the hell are you?”

Well, Mordred made Cid smile. That’s an accomplishment, isn’t it? Capture from the HIDIVE stream.

Smiling happily, Cid held out his hand and snapped his fingers, saying (16:23), “I’m Atomic.”

He said the thing!

He also lit up the solar system. The. Entire. Solar. System. No wonder he put a shield up.

You know, if you’re going to make a character overpowered, you might as well aim high. Given what we’ve seen Cid do in the past, I think it appropriate we ended the season seeing what happens when he really cuts loose.

I just hope he didn’t completely destroy the other planets, because that could have a seriously negative impact on Rose’s world! Orbital mechanics are very unforgiving. And she does not need more hassles.

What did you think of Rose’s reaction to seeing Modred crash beside her? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
