The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter Episode 1 Review – Quick Summary

In The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter Episode 1, “Powerful Skill Set,” Noir Starga had his heart set on becoming a librarian. In fact, he had dressed for his first day at work when he father broke the news: As a baronet, even though his family is aristocracy, they are the lowest of the aristocracy — and the son of a viscount decided he wanted the library job. Noir’s sister Alice suggested Noir try to join the Hero Academy, and with the help of his childhood friend Emma Brightness, he used his skill Great Sage to find a secret dungeon where he could get the needed skills. What he found there might well change his life forever.

I have a strange sense that I’m going to like Olivia… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

It looks like Noir is going to rely heavily on Olivia Servant for his success. Not only did she grant him her skills of Get Creative, Bestow, and Editor, but she also gave him good advice.

Well, at least it seemed like good advice. To pass the Hero Academy exam, he needed to bring back valuable artifacts, since his family was too poor to afford to buy those artifacts. So, following Olivia’s advice, he found himself on the third level of the dungeon, facing a level 99 Dead Reaper. Noir’s own level was in the upper twenties. That’s when he doubted Olivia’s advice.

He managed to kill it, and when he asked Olivia its value, she said it was just a “grunt” monster. So imagine Noir’s surprise when it turned out to be the most valuable artifact the Hero Academy had ever seen.

When confronted with that, Olivia just said (22:16), “Whoops, my bad. A Dead Reaper is nothing to me, but I guess a student hunting them would be a miracle. Well, whatever!”

I think I’m getting to like Olivia. Especially since I’m not Noir — I think he’s in for a bit of a rough ride!

Best in Show Moment for The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter Episode 1

Olivia was in a vulnerable position when Noir entered. What did he do about it? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Whispers in the Dungeon…

I don’t usually review ecchi titles. It’s not because I think I’m above them or anything. Heck, Monster Musume and High School DxD are among my favorite series, and I rewatch them often.

That said, there is a line I prefer not to cross, and it all boils down to one word: Consent. I dropped Citrus because I had to subtitle it “Nonconsensual Touching: The Animation.” I don’t want to see that. A lot of otherwise funny or enjoyable shows stumble there.

But this show? I could be wrong, of course. I didn’t read the manga. But every indication I have is the Noir is a decent dude who’s not going to get all grabby.

Talk about a test of character… Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

My favorite scene seems to prove my point. Noir entered a dungeons. Gotta say that I loved how the floor and walls were a mess. It didn’t look like a cleaning crew had just been through! It was a little touch of realism that I enjoyed. As he explored, he heard a whispered voice welcoming him. Cautiously (another good sign — the MC wasn’t a blithering idiot!), Nori followed the sound of the voice until he got to a closed door. He hesitated to open it, then carefully pulled the handle. He had braced himself to face a terrible monster.

Delivery:… Belonged to a Cheeky Mage

What he saw instead was a beautiful, busty, blue-haired woman chained in the middle of the brightly-lit room. Not seeing any obvious danger, Noir edged closer and asked if she was alive.

Her only answer was to ask him (telepathically?) to touch her head. Now, I’ve played Dungeon and Dragons (though not recently, sad to say). That made me wonder, even though this is a ecchi comedy, whether he should listen to that voice and touch her head. I mean, talk about being the perfect trap!

Noir probably thought the same thing, but he’d come this far. Slowly, he reached out and laid his gloved hand on her head.

In the perkiest voice possible, her mental voiced announced (09:26), “I am Oliver Servant! A totally super-awesome adventurer!” Then she gave him a capsule summary of how she had ended up chained up in a dungeon.

What does Noir do? He touches her only and exactly where she wanted him to touch her. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

This scene confirmed two things. First, the show has some decent comedic timing and the voice acting to back it up. I could listen to Yui Horie, Olivia’s voice actor, talk all day.

Second, it confirmed that Noir was, in fact, a decent human being. Think about it: Here’s a beautiful (no, seriously, she’s beautiful) young woman, chained and immobile, all alone, in a dungeon that only the two of them know about. And what did Noir do? He offered to cut the chains. That’s what I like to see! Consent is important to Noir!

Let’s see if the show rewards my faith in it!

What did you think of Noir’s reaction to his father’s news that a viscount had taken Noir’s job? What was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Honestly, this was a rather mediocre premiere for me, so I really don’t have much to say. I do like Olivia, though; she’s fun. And there’s nothing that particularly bothers me, either. So it’s basically fine.

The way Noir treated his father was a little surprising considering his general personality. In a more character focused show that might have meant something, but here it was just strange.

    1. Olivia was the high point for me, too. She’s managed to keep a pretty sunny disposition despite being chained up for 200 years!

Noir’s off-handed attacks on his father seemed to come out of nowhere. Maybe we’ll get some background later? But yeah, that was a bit strange.

Please let me know what you think!
