The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 1 – Quick Summary
In The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 1, “Double Seven Part I,” a new school year had just gotten underway. Tatsuya and his sister Miyuki reconnected with old friends. They even got to talk to friends who had graduated the previous year, like Mayumi. Mayumi’s twin little sisters, Izumi and Kasumi, were about to start at Magic High School. But underneath the high spirits of a new year lurked the potential for something dark. Takuma Shippou obviously disrespected Tatsuya, which did not sit well with Miyuki – at all. And there are even darker forces at work. Can Tatsuya, Miyuki, and friends enjoy at least one year of peace and quiet?

If looks could kill, I do believe I would have witnessed a murder. Right there, on screen, at the student council meeting. Takuma Shippou, the top student of the incoming class, a member of one of the 18 Assistant Families with the Ten Master Clans (as Tatsuya helpfully told us later), came in.
After the student council president introduced herself, it was Tatsuya’s turn. He stated his name and position (Vice Chairman, too – good for him!). How did Takuma react? He glared disrespectfully at Tatsuya.

Tatsuya, of course, didn’t care. Why would a strategic weapon care what a handgun thought? I mean, seriously! But Miyuki cared. She cared quite a bit. She gave Takuma a glare that would freeze blood. Miyuki could have done it, too, given her powers.
But this was a public venue. She just introduced herself, saying (06:54), “Like my big brother… I am your vice chairman, Miyuki Shiba.”
To Takuma’s credit, he didn’t bolt from the room. Though I’m pretty sure he wanted to.

Setup: A Rich, Enthralling World
I’m excited the show’s back for a third season. Within the genre of science fiction/political thriller, it might be my favorite series. Not only does it present a world of complex, multi-faceted political bodies, it pays attention to details.
For example, did you notice that Azusa Nakajou succeeded Mayumi as student council president? We have a new leader for the Disciplinary Committee, too. People change roles over time, and this show respects that.

There was another cool little detail, and I’m not sure what to think about it. Remember, in that somber opening? When Miyuki and Tatsuya came into the scary living room? After Tatsuya reminded her they’d grown since the last time they had visited, Miyuki sat down in an upholstered chair. You could see their reflections in the glass. As I thought how interesting it was they’d show that level of detail, her reflection’s face turned to look at her – but Miyuki herself didn’t move (01:54).
Magic? Thematic dream-like detail? A misinterpretation on my part? Not sure. But I enjoyed it!
I also enjoyed my favorite moment, primarily because it involved Mayumi. I’m bummed she graduated, but those are the breaks in worlds as authentic as this one. I’m just glad we got to see her again. One of my favorite moments from the first season was Mayumi trying to flirt with Tatsuya, only for him to flirt back – hard. Completely caught her flat-footed. She’s a lot of fun to watch when she gets embarrassed!
Delivery: Tatsuya and Miyumi’s Chemistry
She greeted Tatsuya in this episode as he was heading for the commencement ceremony. They clearly liked seeing each other. Tatsuya even tried to compliment her in her new role as college student. She took umbrage, though, when he said she looked so different and mature – implying, despite his protestations, that she was less than mature before.
I don’t want to say I ship the two of them, but, well, okay, I ship them. It just might work – Mayumi’s powerful, and she’d need that kind of power to have a relationship with Tatsuya with Miyuki around! So I thought it was great when she cast aside her composure and got right in his face. She even grabbed his lapels!
She seemed pretty comfortable getting inside his personal space. He didn’t seem to object, either! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Kasumi wasn’t having it. She thought Tatsuya was putting the moves on her sister. Mayumi realized how close she had gotten to Tatsuya and tried to step away – only to trip.
Tatsuya caught her. Nonchalantly, cooly, and with precision. He caught her and kept her from falling on the ground (10:52).
Without missing a beat, though a little embarrassed, she thanked him.
In a show with such high-stakes family maneuvering and such ridiculously powerful magic, little moments like that seem to hit harder. At least, they do for me! Characters like Tatsuya and Mayumi have such heavy social pressures that seeing them so present to one another in a spontaneous moment brought a smile to my face.
Though to be honest? I kept thinking that Miyuki’s reaction, had she witnessed that moment, would make Kasumi’s look positively tame.
