The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 10 – Quick Summary

In The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 10, “Ancient City Insurrection Part II,” Kyouko Fujibayashi arranged for Tatsuya, Miyuki, and Minami to meet Retsu Kudou head of the Kudou family, to ask for assistance tracking down Gongjin Zhou. Kudou, at first, seemed reluctant to help. Not because he didn’t want to, but because as the head of one of the ten master clans, he was forbidden from conducting any clandestine intra-clan business without consulting the other nine master clans. Did Tatsuya waste his time setting up this meeting? Who else might he turn to for help? And why does Minami seem so flustered when she met Kudou’s youngest son, Minoru Kudou?

Favorite Quote from The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 10

On the left, Tatsuya in big trouble! On the right, Tatsuya back in Miyuki’s good graces! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

We all know that Tatsuya is overpowered (OP). He has overcome every enemy who he’s gone up against. Yet, there is one character who we’ve seen who can kill him. There’s one character who can give even Tatsuya pause. That character is Miyuki.

Back in this season’s episode 7, we even saw her tell Tatsuya to stand down, or she stand him down. Tatsuya wisely backed off.

We can debate whether he’s actually afraid of her power, or afraid of upsetting her. Dude dotes on her like crazy! But the fact remains: cross Miyuki is dangerous, even for Tatsuya. That’s what make my favorite quote stand out.

It was obvious Minoru had utterly stolen Minami’s heart. Tatsuya tried to say that it was because she was a 16 year old girl, so they had to make allowances.

I knew Tatsuya was in trouble when Miyuki said (05:29), “Brother, I’m also 16, and I’m meeting Minoru for the first time. Are you telling me that I don’t fall under the ‘girl’ category?”

I was all for advising Tatsuya to find some hill and run for them. But he was way ahead of me.

“But you’re not just any girl,” he said without missing a beat (05:40). “You’re a refined young lady.”

Judging from her reaction, Tatsuya had just pulled his bacon out of the fire. I was impressed!

Favorite Moment from The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 10

The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 10: Saburou's tactic was sound, but ineffective

It was a good tactic. His foe was just too far beyond him. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: A Bit of Welcome Emotional Warmth from Minami

Seeing Minoru take Minami’s breath away was a welcome change from the high-minded politics and intra-family magical clashes. I love both of those things, but seeing something so natural and sweet added depth to the world. It also added a little levity, because let’s face it: this is not a light and happy world.

As my favorite moment reminded us.

As much as I like Mayumi Saegusa, I have to say I really don’t like her father Kouichi Saegusa at all. Hard political decisions are hard. I get that. But Kouichi is utterly without empathy. He doesn’t seem to regard lives other than his children’s as anything worth protecting. So as soon as he ordered Saburou Nakura to assassinate Gongjin Zhou, I was afraid for Saburou’s life.

The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 10: For Minami, seeing Minoru was love at first sight.

Minami seemed quite taken with Minoru. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Kouichi didn’t want a Yotsuba (Tatsuya) to capture Gongjin and learn of his connection to the Saegusa family. He came out and said it’s be fine if the Yotsubas killed the guy. But capturing him? Not acceptable.

Saburou didn’t seem pleased about the order, but he felt confident in his abilities. He even convinced Gongjin to meet near a stream, which maximized Saburou’s abilities. As you know if you saw the episode, that preparation didn’t matter.

Delivery: Saburou Fought the Good Fight – for a Little While

I liked how the battle started. Saburou tried to nonchalantly say that his family had prepared a place for Gongjin – a place safe from the Yotsubas. Gongjin, on his guard, asked if the place was called the afterlife.

“No!” Saburou said, beginning his attack (18:51). “No! The name of that place is ‘Hell!'”

Saburou seemed to think he could take Gongjin. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

That appealed to the part of me that liked 1980s Arnold schwarzenegger movies. But his bravado didn’t save him. Gongjin out fought him. As Saburou lay dying, Gongjin, whose manners have pretty much been impeccable, asked if he had any last requests.

“If you say so, there’s just one,” he said (21:19).

“What would that be?”

“I want you to die along with me!”

On saying those words, Saburou turned his own blood into a weapon and launched the resulting needles at Gongjin. They weren’t enough, even though they did injure Gongjin. But I have to respect the bravery and dedication Saburou brought to the fight. If we didn’t know before after his encounter with Mitsugu Kuroba back in this season’s episode 8, we know now: Gongjin is a powerful adversary. Probably powerful enough to make Tatsuya work for a victory. At least, that’s how I hope it plays out. We’ll know soon – there are only two more episodes left!
