In The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 12, “Ancient City of Insurrection Part IV,” Tatsuya and Minoru wanted to continue their search. However, Miyuki and Minami were ready for lunch. That was just as well, because they found a restaurant run by a traditionalist who was willing to help them. Can they trust his leads? Is he acting in good faith? And why is Minoru constantly on the edge of collapse?

Tatsuya and Minoru led the search. Miyuki and Minami brought up the rear. Tatsuya could sense traces of Ancient Magic, but not enough to get a fix on a source. Minoru could tell the enemy used familiars, but he, too, could not find a source.
They headed for a restaurant where they intended to meet a traditionalist. Tatsuya had questions for the man, and using his magical vision, he could see the man standing in the back of the building.. The woman out from asked if they wanted a table for four.
Tatsuya declined, intending to go straight to the owner and interrogate him. Then he looked over to see Miyuki and Minami excitedly reviewing the menu.
“I guess we’ll get started after lunch,” he thought (02:52).
It was nice to see Tatsuya thinking of other’s needs.

I’m a little surprised that Miyuki bought it when Tatsuya said (18:15), “I plan to go to the police again tomorrow and ask about the people we caught today.” Not just Miyuki – everyone seemed to take Tatsuya at his word.
To give Miyuki credit, she tried to argue that she should stay with him. But he reminded her that she was the student council president, and her not being at school would be bad optics.
That’s Tatsuya. Always looking out for Miyuki!
That night, he even gave a good impression of intending to come home the next morning. He and Miyuki talked, and he seemed to put her mind at ease. Did she really believe him? Did anyone? I think they did – though I won’t be surprised if some of them show up in the next episode!
You’ve probably guessed by now (or you saw the episode and know) that no, Tatsuya didn’t go to the police. He went to the traditionalist stronghold they’d found the day before. After checking for traps, he strode in. The enemy attacked – but you can guess how much that mattered to Tatsuya.

The enemy was using optical camouflage. As a demonstration of its ineffectiveness, Tatsuya took out two of them. He almost sounded disappointed when he told them he could still see them.
My favorite part is when he gave them a chance to make this easy on themselves. He walked to the middle of the room, stopped, and calmly said (20:45),”Why don’t you stop wasting my time and show yourselves?”
They showed themselves. They also attacked, for all the good it did. But I thought it was cool Tatsuya gave them a chance to at least make things a bit easier on themselves.
