The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 6 – Quick Summary
In The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 6, “Steeplechase Part II,” Retsu Kudou expressed absolute certainty that his new weapons could not be co-opted. He even seemed to believe it! But there were other factions at play, and some of them have little-known techniques. Is Retsu right? And if he’s not, what does that mean for Tatsuya and his plans? Because there’s no way he could let something like an out-of-control-parasite doll loose anywhere near Miyuki!

Favorite Quote from The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 6
Ayako had been busy! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
I like understatement. I especially like it in a wildly capable character as they simultaneously assert their humility and flout their skills. Take, for example, my favorite quote.
While Tatsuya was on a dangerous recon mission, Mitsugu and Ayako visited Miyuki and Minami. Overtly, they wanted to bring Miyuki up to speed on the spy-work Ayako had been doing. Covertly, I’m not sure what they were up to. They’re probably acting on orders from Maya to have some impact on Miyuku. I’m having a hard time keeping all the alliances and double-crosses clear in my mind!
Mitsugu seemed surprised and concerned that Tatsuya was out learning about the P-Weapon. Why? Because he had at least some of the information Tatsuya was looking for. More precisely, Ayako had it. Handing the storage device to Miyuki, Ayako summarized what she’d found. Then she explained how hard it had been to get the information.
Crossing her arms and smiling in a self-deprecating way, she said (11:36), “I was up against another Ten Master Clan, and their security system was extremely robust.”
Well, maybe less self-deprecating and more self-deprecating-like.
Favorite Moment from The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Episode 6
Not exactly a mere social call. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Setup: Again, Solid Characters Make the Difference
Are you having as much trouble keeping the factions straight as I am? Fortunately, it’s Reddit to the rescue! User SnabDedraterEdave posted a handy summary of the factions. I love this kind of political infighting, but woth the years between seasons and the weeks between episodes, I have to confess that it’s hard for me to keep everyone straight.
Did Tatsuya look tired in this episode or what? Dude’s been putting in the hours. It doesn’t seem to have hurt him much. When he was surveilling the location with parasite dolls, he was able to repel the attack without bothering with a CAD. Still, Miyuki and Minami both looked worried.
CADs are for the weak! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
My favorite moment this week has everything to do with my opinion of Maya. Which is quite high. I mean, she’s whip-smart, she’s politically adept, she’s stunningly gorgeous, and she’s one of the most powerful characters we’ve met. What’s not to like?
And in this episode, she showed she has a wicked sense of humor.
I like military characters done right. You can tell from how I portray them in my novels. Also, I don’t like stereotypes. I particularly don’t like stereotypes of the military. That’s why I like how this show portrays Hiromi Saeki (the fandom post has more information about her). She knows something’s up. She just not sure what. Or what, in this case in particular.
Late one night, she got a video call. Guess who it was? It was Maya, her image placid on the screen – as if this were a mere social call. Which is wasn’t. Maya doesn’t do light social chats, and Hiromi knew it.
Delivery: Surfacing the Lede
Hiromi recovered quickly from her shock. She’s a major after all; they’re resilient folks. Maya, in her beautiful, lyrical voice, said she knew the major was busy, so she’d be brief. And what would she be brief about?
“Regarding the plot that your brigade is about to fall victim to,” she said sweetly (18:27).
Maya then proceeded to lay out the plot while Hiromi listened. Maya even commiserated with her – saying that not only were those behind the plot trying to misuse Hiromi’s troops, but a member of the Yotsuba family, as well. But in laying out the problem with that one sentence, Maya showed just how audacious she was. How in command of the situation. And how willing to work with others!
Or maybe through others?
Maya surprised Hiromi with news that they both had something at stake. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.
Hiromi agreed to help, of course. Maybe Maya misled her, but it really did seem like their goals were aligned. In the final analysis, isn’t that what politics should be about? Bringing people with similar goals together and helping them achieve those goals?
Plus, I am in no way too proud to say that Maya is just that cool.
What did you think of Tatsuya swatting aside a potent magical attack without a CAD? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!
