The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 1 Review – Quick Summary
In The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc episode 1, “Visitor Arc 1,” other countries had become alarmed at the introduction of a new Strategic Class Magician. This new magician had destroyed an entire naval fleet. The USNA sent a team, led by the lethal military magician Angelina Kudou Shields, into Japan to spy on likely candidates. However, she’s not wise to the ways of Japanese society, and she’s a terrible spy, so Tatsuya Shiba suspected her within seconds of first meeting. However, the hunt for the Strategic Class Magician isn’t their only concern, and it’s not long before Angelina receives new orders. Can Tatsuya fend off the unwanted attention? Can Angelia adapt to her new orders — despite her conscience? Most importantly, how will Miyuki Shiba adjust to yet another attractive woman in Tatsuya’s vicinity?

Favorite Quote from The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 1
It’s a little flashy, but personally I thought it looked good on her. Capture from the Hulu stream.
I think I’m starting to warm up to Angelina. I liked her resolve and strength in the early moment of the episode. She seemed a little too ditzy in the middle, but near the end, she actually challenged Tatsuya — and came away from the experience unscathed.
In the first quarter of the episode, she tried to do some early reconnaissance on Tatsuya. It was almost painful to watch her try to blend into the New Years temple traffic with what she thought was a yukata. However, most traditional yukatas don’t have such short skirts, and they certainly don’t have fur collars.
When Angelina got home, a non-commissioned officer staying with her, Sylvia Mercury First, expressed outage at the outfit. When Angelina asked what was wrong with it, Sylvia told her.
“The only place I might see an outfit like that is in sketchy anime or comics!” she said (11:24), emphasizing “sketchy.”
I enjoy a self-aware series.
Best in Show Moment for The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 1
“Just a high school student,” she said of Tatsuya. I think she has a perceptual adjustment coming in the next few episodes! Capture from the Hulu stream.
Setup: I’m Not Sure Who Knows What
I’ve always liked the mix of intrigue and action in this series. This episode gave me indications that this arc will be no different. For example, we know (or strongly suspect) that Tatsuya is the Strategic Class Magician that they’re looking for. I thought Linda and her superiors in the USNA knew that, but now I’m not sure.
And if the answer’s obvious to you based on what was in this episode, please do feel free to correct me in the comments!
I say Lina doesn’t know because of what happened in this scene. Mia had visited to join in their discussions. Sylvie hadn’t learned anything, and Mia, who was staking out the university, had also came up blank. They asked Lina how her investigation was going.
Disappointed by their own lack of progress, Sylvie and Mia asked Lina how her work was going. Capture from the Hulu stream.
Lina said she was on good terms with the “target,” which I took to mean Tatsuya as the potential Strategic Class Magician. She confessed she was afraid that her cover was about to be blown. It was all because of a seemingly innocent question from Tatsuya.
Keep in mind that Lina’s military name is Angie Sirius. Also keep in mind that Tatsuya and Miyuki both know that she is the Commander of the Stars. In other words, they know her real identity.
Delivery: I Am Sure Lina Underestimated Tatsuya
The incident Lina described to Mia and Silvia had to do with having lunch with Tatsuya and his friends. Out of the blue, without any hint of accusation or any indication he was fishing for facts, Tatsuya asked why her nickname was Lina when the diminutive of Angelina was usually Angie.
The opening scenes with Lina at the temple gave us an idea she wasn’t great at spy craft. Her reaction to Tatsuya’s question was even more clear. Her eyes widened and she froze (10:67).
By the way, as we watch Lina react, watch Erika Chiba eating her lunch. Whatever Erika’s having, she’s really enjoying it!
Lina tried to recover and say that in school, when she’d gotten the nickname, there was already an Angie in her class. Back in the present, Sylvia asked if it were a coincidence, and Lina had to admit that she wasn’t sure.
Nice poker face, Lina! Capture from the Hulu stream.
Then, to try to lighten the mood, she smiled and said (17:21), “It’s fine! He’s just a high school student!”
If they suspect he’s the Strategic Class Magician, would she say he’s just a high school student? That seemed almost like a hint! In any case, calling Tatsuya “just a high school student” shows that poor Lina doesn’t know what she’s in for — even if she did try to test him at the end.
What did you think of the episode’s setup, especially Lina having to kill Freddy? What was your Best in Show moment? Let me know in the comments!
