The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 11 Review – Quick Summary

In The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc episode 11, “Visitor Arc XI,” Lina/Angie Sirius thought hard about the offer that Tatsuya made during the previous episode. How did she view her role in the parasite affair? Will she accept his offer? Meanwhile, Sakurai Minami sat alone in a normal classroom on the third floor. Or was it a normal classroom? Because a squad of soldiers tried to blow her up with rocket-propelled grenades. When that failed, they tried to burst in through the doors, then the windows. When all was said and done, she stood, again alone, surrounded by death soldiers. Yotsuba Maya, watching via one of the soldier’s body cams, said they’d “go with her.” Just what does that mean? What’s Yotsuba up to now?

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 11: Lina considers Tatsuya's offer

Lina seemed relieved that she didn’t have to be an assassin. Capture from the Funimation stream.

Lina had a rough way to go in this series. She went from being the lauded top of the food chain in the USNA to a punching bag in Japan. I suppose it had to help her feel a little better when she realized just how powerful Tatsuya and Miyuki really were, but still, her experience had to cause some soul-searching.

It seemed that’s exactly what happened at the beginning of this episode. Lina stood staring out the window and thought about the things she’d had to do — like murdering the parasites in cold blood. She had given herself a justification, but it didn’t sit well with her. Then she remembered Tatsuya’s offer to help her leave the military.

“I can be something other than Sirius,” she thought, her mood brightening. She had just taken the first step to asserting more control over her own life.

Best in Show Moment for The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 11

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 11: There's OP and then there's OP...

A character’s perspective can tell us a lot. Capture from the Funimation stream.

Setup: Tatsuya Isn’t Over Powered…

I checked the Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Wiki for Sakurai Minami’s record to confirm that this is the first time we’ve seen her in the anime. Please be aware: Those links contain major spoilers for anime viewers like me! I’ve instructed myself to promptly forget what I read. But this was the first time we met her in the anime.

All I remember is thinking that wow, we’re on the edge of a pretty exciting arc…

So I’ve read a lot about Tatsuya being over powered (OP). I’ve talked about it myself. To be perfectly frank, though, I think in many cases, he defeats his enemies not with raw power, but with surprise and subtle tactics. Yes, he’s a strategic-class magician. But he doesn’t know everything. In one case this season, he asked Yotsuba Maya for help because he didn’t understand the kind of spell Lina had used to camouflage herself.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 11: Tatsuya went to his aunt Maya for _help_

I hadn’t given it much thought before, but Tatsuya did come to his aunt for help… Capture from the Funimation stream.

In other cases, enemies under estimated Tatsuya because he’s a high school student. That gives him a chance to use his speed and robust knowledge to crush them.

To be clear: He’s ridiculously powerful. But OP is only OP when compared to lesser powers. I’m beginning to think that Tatsuya is just the tip of the spear.

My evidence in this case is circumstantial. I’d like to present it to you to get your take on it.

Delivery: Compared to His Own Family!

We saw how Minami took out a coordinated attack by a dozen or more soldiers — all the while wearing her school uniform. She’s effective at defense and she’s effective at neutralizing her enemy.

Though part of me wonders if those poor soldiers deserved what happened to them…

We’ve also seen Tatsuya not only go to his aunt for advice. He follows her orders. The guy that’s a strategic weapon and who can restore his shattered body using EIDOS takes order from his aunt.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 11: Maya prepared Minami for her mission

Maya went to the effort to make sure Minami understood the mission’s context. That’s good leadership — and suggests a mature, successful organization. Capture from the Funimation stream.

Apparently, there’s a magician terrorist organization named New Breed Front, and they plan to disrupt a social event. Maya intends to send her butler Hayama Tadanori, and she ordered Minami to go with him as his body guard. Maya’s instructions?

“If the situation demands urgent attention, follow Hayama’s instructions” (21:02).

Look, maybe I’m reading too much into her statement, but you don’t call a major attack by magician terrorists a “situation” that “demands urgent attention” unless you view the world a little differently than non-OP people. And you certainly don’t casually watch a school girl take our a military attack and decide that yeah, she’ll do as a body guard.

Tatsuya may be OP compared to other students. But he might just be above average in the world his aunt inhabits.
