The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 4 Review – Quick Summary
In The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc episode 4, “Visitor Arc IV,” Tatsuya Shiba unmasked Angelina Kudou Shields. Unfortunately, now that he knew her secret identity, her orders required her to kill him. Before she could try, Miyuki Shiba arrived and saw that someone was trying to harm her brother. The last time anyone threatened Tatsuya in front of Miyuki, it took the authorities quite a while to sort out the bodies (even if she technically left them all alive). Miyuki challenged Angelina right then and there. Angelina is almost as powerful as Tatsuya — will both of them survive the fight? Will the city?

Favorite Quote from The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 4
I felt sorry for Lina. She’s enormously powerful, but she’s never faced anyone like Tatsuya or Miyuki before. That had to be a blow to her self confidence! Capture from the Hulu stream.
I feel like I’m picking on Angelina/Lina, and though I don’t mean to, she has some of the funniest quotes in the show. She’s this enormously powerful magician. She’s the commander of an elite force. Yet, she has moments where she falters, even if just for a moment. Far from detracting from her status or power, I think it makes her more human, especially when compared to Tatsuya.
The day after her city-threatening battle with Miyuki, she was in still in bed. Sylvia tried to convince her to get up, but Lina was distraught. She went on about how she had disgraced herself and her unit. She was going to have to turn in the codename of Sirius because of what just happened.
When Sylvia tried to tell her that her performance had been exemplary, Lina protested (13:35), “What kind of commander loses to a high school student?”
I can’t blame her, though we know just what kind of high school students she faced. I think when she figures that out, she’ll feel a bit more confident.
Best in Show Moment for The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 4
Miyuki was as delighted as I was surprised — character growth from Tatsuya? Capture from the Hulu stream.
Setup: Miyuki Knew Something Was Up
Tatsuya and Miyuki were riding home after meeting with Erika Chiba, Mikihiko Yoshida, Mayumi Saegusa, and Katsuto Juumonji. Tatsuya stared out the window. He looked the same as someone with emotions would look if something weighed heavily on them. But we all know Tatsuya doesn’t have emotions like that, right?
Miyuki noticed it, too, and prodded him for an answer. He tried to brush it aside, so Miyuki asked if it was about Lina. With a sigh, he marveled at how he couldn’t keep anything secret from her. Then he confessed that he’d known Lina was up to something since he met her.
“But I didn’t want to make any waves in my own life,” he said (20:50), “so I let her go.”
Tatsuya’s musing had left him actually feeling pensive! Capture from the Hulu stream.
So I’m thinking that okay, he feels embarrassed that he didn’t act earlier. Kinda like he felt imperfect because of what turned out to be a bad decision. But there was actually more to it than that — so much more that it actually surprised me!
Delivery: Miyuki Witnessed Actual Character Growth!
Tatsuya actually thumped his fist against the armrest. He was angry with himself because he saw how his decision put Leonhart Saijou in harm’s way.
Saying that he felt responsible, he said “When I’m confronted by the fact that my friend got hurt, I can’t help thinking that even if it’s counterproductive” (21:08).
In an instant, two things jumped out at me. He called Leo his friend, and it didn’t sound like he was simply trying to approximate human feelings. He was speaking from his own perspective, alone, with the one person he can utterly trust — Miyuki. And second, he felt guilty about Leo’s injuries! That’s kinda a human thing, isn’t it?
Miyuki agreed, saying, in an almost awed voice (21:17), “Brother, you’ve become a kind person!”
Miyuki had to laugh in a kind-hearted way when Tatsuya didn’t have any idea what she was talking about. Capture from the Hulu stream.
He didn’t quite know what she meant, and as she tried to explain it, he got quiet and turned away. Only Miyuki would be able to interpret what that action meant — he felt embarrassed!
Well, knock me over with a feather! Tatsuya is developing emotions. The moment was both unexpected and a little heart-warming, especially seeing how happy Miyuki felt about this development. I expected well-executed magical combat, and I got that plus a touching character moment! This season is full of surprises!
