The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 6 Review – Quick Summary

In The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc episode 6, “Visitor Arc VI,” Angelina Kudou Shields/Lina had to face the consequences for her failures to eliminate the parasite threat. For one thing, the USNA recalled Sylvia Mercury. For another, Colonel Virginia Balance, Lina’s superior officer, made it clear that she was going to keep Lina on a short leash. Will it be possible for the USNA’s most powerful magician to redeem herself? At the same time, a less impactful but no less dramatic scene played out. Honoka Mitsui and Mayumi Saegusa both wanted to give Tatsuya Shiba Valentine’s Day chocolates. Both had very different motives. How will Tatsuya react to either — if he reacts at all? And how will Lina react to her new house mate?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 6: Miyuki admitted what the rest of us already knew

Looks like Miyuki hadn’t been quite honest with herself until now! Capture from the Hulu stream.

It’s been the source of innuendo and jokes for pretty much the whole series. Tatsuya would pretend to have romantic feelings for his sister Miyuki Shiba in front of the student council, reveal the joke, and everyone would get a good laugh. Except that Miyuki’s laugh was a little less enthusiastic than the others.

Back then, did she admit to herself that she had feelings for Tatsuya? I’m not sure. In this episode, for example, she encouraged Honoka to give Tatsuya chocolate, and she didn’t look jealous at the prospect of Lina giving Tatsuya “obligatory” chocolate.

Towards the end of this episode, though, she didn’t cook off all of the brandy in the chocolate fondu. She got herself a little drunk, and as Tatsuya cleared the table, she sat alone on the couch and admitted something to herself.

“Why must I be his sister?” she said (21:59), before raising her hands to her mouth in shock.

I really felt bad for her at the end of that scene!

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 6: Mayumi is just scary

I guess getting any reaction out of Tatsuya, even a furrowed brow, was enough to send Mayumi into a happy place. Capture from the Hulu stream.

Setup: Mayumi Saegusa Plans Ahead

Remember in the previous episode how Mayumi planned to get even with Tatsuya because she felt like he was using her and the others on the student council? How she wanted to feed him the most bitter chocolate possible?

She wasn’t kidding.

In this episode, we got a shot of her maniacally laboring over the stove. Beside her was a package of 95% cacao (0% sugar). Beside it was a package of espresso powder. Her sisters Izumi and Kasumi peeked in at her, worried. They knew that the mixture wasn’t right, and they knew that the finished product would be nearly inedible.

They were worried about her. One of them even wondered aloud if something bad had happened to her and she was plotting revenge.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 6: Mayumi has serious planning skills

I doubt it’ll ever come up, but if it does, please remind me not to incur her wrath. She’s dangerous. Capture from the Hulu stream.

Mayumi’s villain laugh was a little too loud.

Later, while on patrol, Tatsuya came across Mayumi in the cafeteria. Hattori was nearly catatonic, and even after Tatsuya had given him a drink of water, he could barely haul himself away. Tatsuya no doubt saw Mayumi’s expression. He was on guard. But when she offered him the gift-wrapped box of chocolate, was he really prepared?

Delivery: …And Pays Attention to Details

Tatsuya tried to change the subject. He asked to talk about the parasite case, and he spent several minutes talking to her about it. For a while, she listened, all business-like. She was the model of a powerful student council president.

He asked her for behind the scenes updates on any victims. She confided that they’d kept it out of the news, but the parasites were still active, but they were limiting their victim count to keep a low profile. He shared his theory for how they communicated, and for a while, he had her completely distracted. Finally, he tried to excuse himself. He even turned to walk away.

Mayumi, though, was on a mission. Before he had taken a single step, she had grabbed his right wrist. He turned to see her pointing a perfectly manicured nail at the gift box.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode 6: Mayumi wasn't about to let Tatsuya leave without tasting the chocolate

Wow, Mayumi looks happy in this shot. Capture from the Hulu stream.

He was trapped, and he knew it. Etiquette demanded that he taste the chocolate or risk giving serious offense. With a sigh, he broke off a piece. Mayumi was nearly beside herself with anticipation. Chocolate shouldn’t crunch as much as it did when he bit down. One of his eyebrows twitched. Mayumi was in heaven.

She really shouldn’t have been that happy at his discomfort! But both of them stayed so perfectly in character that I thought the moment was hilarious.
