The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 6 Review – Quick Summary

In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 6, “Magic Sword Tournament,” the teacher Emilia Rudewell made a surprise announcement. Not only will Ray Gransdori represent the class in the sword tournament as expected, but so will Anos Voltegourde! Why would the school want that? It’s a question that Anos took seriously enough to ask Ivis Necron to investigate what political machinations might be at work. Fortunately, Ivis had the perfect disguise, and it fit in well with Anos’ plans with Misha Necron. Meanwhile, Misha had plans of her own, and she found a willing accomplice to help her. Is her plan too ambitious? Or is it just right?

Best in Show Moment for The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 6

The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 6: The crowd's jeers infuriated mama Anos. She unleashed mom mode on them.

Mama-Anos (a.k.a. Isabella) went into full Mom Mode and lectured an entire stadium full of demons. And they listened. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: Anos Senses a Trap

In a first for this series, Anos makes a decision to be cautious. But it’s in character, I think! He exercised caution not out of a concern for his own safety, but because he wanted to draw out his enemy. If the followers of Avos Dilhevia wanted to put Anos into the tournament for reasons unknown, then maybe he could force them to show themselves if he declined to participate. Even if it’s not Avos himself, exposing the Royalists would help Anos and especially the Unitarians that make up the Anos Fan Union.

I like how Anos is helps his followers.

One of the Seven Demon Emperors who appears loyal to Anos, Melheis Boran, actually suggested the idea. Melheis supports Misa Iriologue and the other Unitarians, so he seems legitimate. Seeing his old Demon King reincarnated honestly seemed to please him. Not only that, but I think this Avos character’s attempt to thwart him personally annoyed Anos. I suspect the idea of throwing a monkey wrench in his plans appealed to Anos.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 6: Seeing his old Demon King reincarnated seemed to move Melheis.

Maybe they’re just crocodile tears, but Melheis seemed genuinely moved to see his old Demon King reincarnated. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

What Anos didn’t count on was his mother’s pride in her son. Or his dad’s devotion.

Delivery: Anos Is a Good Son

When it came time for the fight, the emcee announced the name of the Royalist to the cheers of the crowd. When Anos didn’t appear after the emcee calling his name, the crowd began to jeer him. They also jeered the Unitarians, who the Royalists now believed were following Anos. The young women who made up the Anos Fan Union were upset.

But not half as upset as his mother.

After a few moments enduring the slurs, she finally snapped. “My Anos can become Demon Lord,” she said, her fists raised (20:21). Her voice was filled such such maternal fury that the crowd went silent. “My Anos is powerful, good-looking, and such an amazing boy!” she continued. “Don’t you laugh at my child’s dreams!”

Anos hadn’t expected that. His dad showed up to deliver the magic sword he himself had made. Apparently, he’d had to climb to the top of a mountain to get the ore, and he injured himself in the process. Despite that, he was beaming with pride as he handed the sword to his son. He wanted his son to prove that even a hybrid could achieve something as lofty as becoming Demon King.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 6: Papa Anos didn't let something minor like falling off a cliff delay delivery of his son's new sword.

Papa-Anos (a.k.a. Guster) apparently fell off a cliff getting the metal for his son’s sword. But he didn’t let something like a head wound slow him down! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I think after his mom’s speech, Anos would have entered the arena with a stick — just like last week! But now that he had the sword his dad had custom made for him?

“Right now,” Anos said (21:22), “all I want is to see mom and dad look overjoyed.”

I tell you what. Anos has the best parents! He’s a pretty good son, too.

  1. This was a fun episode. I usually don’t go for tournament arcs. Often they just feel like fan service with no contribution to the plot. But in this case, I am curious to see what trap Avos has set up. I also want to see how Anos and Ray match up when Anos has a real sword and Ray lets loose with everything he’s got.

    1. “But in this case, I am curious to see what trap Avos has set up.”

The show’s setup Anos as so powerful, I wonder what Avos could possibly do! I’m not sure the show will go dark enough for Avos to actually harm Anos’ parents — I’d be inclined to write a strongly-worded letter myself if that were to happen!
