The Misfit Of Demon King Academy Episode 1 Review – Best In Show
In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 1, “The Misfit of Demon King Academy,” it had been 2000 years since the Demon King left the world, and prophecy said he will reappear this year. Naturally, all eyes are on the Demon King Academy’s students, where the next Demon King is expected to reintroduce himself. Aristocratic students like Zepes Indu assume they’re in line, especially compared to a no-name young woman named Misha Necron, who had the misfortune to drop her letter of introduction near Zepes. When Anos Voltegourde, another non-noble student, picked it up for her, Zepes tried to assert his power and authority. Anos, however, seemed beyond unconcerned. What gives him such confidence? Is he just showing off for Misha? Or is there something else, something much bigger, going on?

The Misfit Of Demon King Academy Episode 2 Review – Best In Show
In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 2, “The Witch of Destruction,” Anos Voltegourde learned part of the reason so many at school look down on him: they don’t think he’s really in the Demon King clan because they remember the wrong Demon King name! So, no matter what he does, with the exception of those who have experienced his power first hand, no one believes his claims. He put their ignorance to the test when Sasha Necron, Misha Necron’s older sister, challenged him to a team match. Against him, Sasha planned to use ten or fifteen powerful students. Anos will use only one, Misha. Will Sasha realize her error before Anos destroys her — and her team? Will Misha miss her older sister? And what will Anos’ mom Isabella fix for his celebration dinner?

Will the teacher and many of the students survive the shock? Later, the class takes a dungeon test in an ancient castle. Anos tells Sasha Necron and Misha Necron, his teammates, that it’s actually his old castle. So of course, he knows where all of the magical items are. However, when he turns his back, Sasha does something quite unexpected. Something even Anos didn’t seem to see coming. How will he respond to something like that?

In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 4, “15th Birthday,” Sasha Necron had done her level best to make her sister, Misha Necron, hate her passionately. That included plunging a knife into her chest. Yet, Sasha’s Demonic Eyes of Destruction remained quiet and unused, which suggested she wasn’t really feeling it. With Anos Voltegourde in the picture, what could Sasha possibly hope to gain? At the same time, the plot around Avos Dihevia deepened, as Ivis Necron made another appearance. What’s his angle? Does he still intend to stay neutral? Or does he have other plans?

It’s a question that Anos took seriously enough to ask Ivis Necron to investigate what political machinations might be at work. Fortunately, Ivis had the perfect disguise, and it fit in well with Anos’ plans with Misha Necron. Meanwhile, Misha had plans of her own, and she found a willing accomplice to help her. In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 9, “The Mystery of the Hero Academy,” Anos Voltegourde learned that the class was going to the capital to test against the Hero Academy. Melheis Boran urged Anos to be careful, because that school’s elite class trained only resurrected heroes — in a time of peace! Anos, Sasha, Misha, Ray, and Misa teleport to the capital. The others went on various errands while Anos and Sasha visited the Hero Academy. There, they met Eleonore Bianca, who agreed to show them to the library. Much to Sasha’s consternation, they learned that Heroes think Kanon had defeated the Demon King of Tyranny. Moreover, they believe that Kanon also created the walls to keep humanity safe. In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 11, “The Glow of Life,” Anos Voltegourde, Sasha Necron, Misha Necron, and Ray Gransdori took on the reincarnations representing Kanon’s fragmented source. The Heroes erected a barrier that drained demonic powers, but Anos, promising to shield Misha, asked her to erect their own fortress within the barrier. It became immediately obvious that the Heroes were no more willing to abide by the rules than they were in the previous episode. The Misfit Of Demon King Academy Episode 12 Review – Best In Show
In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 12, “Taboo Magic,” Anos Voltegourde confronted Eleanor Bianca, but hadn’t needed to. She willingly told him all she knew. Which was a lot, especially about the fate of the original Kanon. While they were talking, Diego arrived, ready to do battle with Anos for defiling Eleanor’s shrine. A third party showed up to interrupt that right. This time, it was none other than Avos Dilhevia, with the Demon Lord Emperors that Anos has not freed already. Just what is Avos hoping to gain? Why is Diego so hell-bent on war? And what did Eleanor’s insights about Kanon tell Anos — if anything?
The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 13: Let the World Be Filled with Love
The Misfit Of Demon King Academy Episode 13 Review – Best In Show
In The Misfit of Demon King Academy Episode 13, “Let the World Be Filled With Love,” Ray Gransdori explained why he created Avos Dilhevia two thousand years ago. Anos Voltegourde understood completely, of course, but both were determined to protect the other — at enormous cost. Even with with all of his Sources intact, was there any way for Ray to win an armed conflict with Anos? Whether he does or not, can the survivor stop Jerga’s magical form, a form that’s grown powerful by absorbing over 2000 years of hate? Or will the explosive force of thousands of Zeshias self-destructing destroy all those present, demon and human alike?
It was a fun anime. But I am starting to tire of the overpowered protagonist pretending to be a student. Irregular at Magic High, Noblesse, et al.
TBH, this did remind me a lot of Irregular at Magic High, at least in terms of the main character. And I haven’t seen Noblesse yet, so maybe the trope hasn’t worn out its welcome yet. That said, there was in enough in this show with the parents and Anos Fan Union to make it stand out for me.
If I have a complaint, it’s that Misha didn’t get enough to do by herself.
They take the same primary trope and hang different other secondary tropes onto it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
Irregular started with what could have been a great social dystopia plot, wimped out on that, then transformed into a magical sports contest with an undercurrent of danger, then rewrote iitself yet again into all out magical warfare anime. And now the hero is a literal atomic bomb delivery system.
Sure, but Miyuki is ridiculously cute, and Erika’s no slouch.
In all seriousness, I hear what you’re saying about “what could have been a great social dystopia plot.” The blooms versus weeds was a great lens for that kind of exploration, and they just dropped it.
I also get what you’re saying about Tatsuya being a literal strategic weapon. I almost expected that, though, given his Eidos ability. I mean, the guy can restore his body from a near real-time backup in the event he’s killed. Where does a narrative go from that?
Well, it makes the MC a nuclear weapon.
I’m still enjoying the show. I was only partly joking about Erika! But I’d enjoy it even more if they seriously investigate the social implications of a human strategic weapon. They might actually do that this season — at least, I hope so!
