Tower of God Season Two Episode 02 – Quick Summary

In Tower of God Season 2 episode 02, “The Strongest Regular,” Wangnan Ja thought he’d been given a streak of good luck – he made it to the next exam! But then he noticed several other people had made it, too – people he recognized. Like Kim Lurker, the loan shark (or, as he preferred, the “money lender”). Why was he there? What does it mean for Wangnan Ja’s chances of keeping his organs inside his body? And seriously – why does Jyu Viole Grace look so much like Bam?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

He sounded so matter-of-fact about it, too. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I think I’m going to enjoy seeing Kim Lurker, the loan shark (and I don’t care what he tried to tell Wangran Ja – if your late payment fee entails removing organs, you’re not a mere ‘money lender’) get his. Because the dude, and the guy he works for, are pretty effective annoyance-level villains.

But he has a twisted sense of humor that made me laugh.

Wangan Ja was feeling lucky. He’d made it to the next exam. The second group of people to arrive at first seemed innocuous. Then he started seeing people he remembered, like the woman who had used a flamethrower on him. And then he saw his loan shark.

Said loan shark, Kim Lurker, started waving happily at Wangnan Ja. He even came up and chatted happily about how he was a Regular, how his boss had paid heaps of cash to help his son get this far in the tower, and basically how his entire entourage was a walking cheat.

Wangnan Ja asked why the loan shark told him all this. “Well,” he said (07:56). “To offer my condolences, I guess?

Wangnan Ja wasn’t amused. But I was!

It was not a popular announcement. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Setup: How Powerful is Bam?

There are times I want an unambiguous show of power. We got one in this episode, and its setup came close all by itself to being my favorite moment.

We spent a good portion of the episode on the latest test. Combatants would interact with a meter that measured their Shinsu. I felt sorry for Wangnan Ja – the dude was convinced he would come in last. He didn’t. But he wasn’t near the top.

We saw Horyang Kang take his turn. He hoped to show up the arrogant son of a CEO (which kinda sounds like an insult, doesn’t it?), and at first, he did. That is, until the CEO’s son’s mercenary took his turn. The subs called him Robdevil. His score shamed Horyang Kang.

The CEO’s son even went – and he outscored Robdevil. Then it was Jyu Viole Grace’s turn – and by now, I think it’s clear this guy is a depressed Bam. Bam’s score? About 10x that of the CEO’s son. Bam made it clear – he was in a different league. But he wasn’t done with the instruction yet.

Delivery: What’s Bam’s Goal?

The contest wasn’t to pick the top eight combatants, which everyone assumed. It was to pick the top contestant, then have that contestant choose the others. That pissed off everyone who had scored well. But it gave hope to those who had not. Like Wangnan Ja.

Wangnan Ja was so desperate that he begged Bam to choose him. Several others, though disgusted with Wangnan Ja’s lack of pride, joined in. This is the Tower of God. They all wanted to climb.

How much does Wangnan Ja want to climb the tower? This much! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

The judge said he’a allow it. So who did Bam choose?

“I chose no one,” he said in a serious tone (18:04). “I alone am enough. Please fail the others.”

I would say Bam’s being arrogant. But seeing how his score was ten times higher than the next highest, it’s hard to argue with him, based solely on the merits of power. Why does he so want to travel alone? Is it because he doesn’t want to risk another betrayal like Rachel’s? Does he plan on meeting others instead, maybe from his old team (like Aguero Agnes Khun)? I don’t know, but I like how the show’s building tension with its mysteries. That’s kinda what The Tower of God does!
