Tower of God Season Two Episode 05 – Quick Summary

In Tower of God Season 2 episode 05, “The Other Team,” Aguero Agnes Khun has been taking care of Rachel. She still wakes up from nightmares that force her, as she tells Khun, to remember the time when Bam fought monsters to protect her – and died in the attempt. Khun did his best to comfort her. All the while, Khun has been recruiting a new team to restart his ascent. Does Khun suspect what Rachel really did? Can he trust his new teammates? And why is Viole heading for a karaoke establishment?

Tower of God Season Two Episode 05: Edin Dan made quite an impression -- in the ground.

Welcome to the team, Edin Dan! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m not sure how much I like Edin Dan, but the character’s already starting to grow on me. For example: he just assumed he was faster and smarter than Khun, which is why he sauntered out of the restaurant after supposedly defeating Khun. But when he regained consciousness in Khun’s compound, he didn’t whine or complain or try to get out of the bet. He lost; he accepted it. I respect that.

I also respect the establishment of pecking orders. Generally, I prefer a more civilized way of deciding said order than brute force. After all, anyone can win any given battle. But this is Tower of God, so they’re going to decide Tower of God things in the Tower of God way. Which means violence or deception.

Novick introduced Edin Dan to the team, then announced the pecking order fight. Everyone except Novick, Ran, and Edin Dan bowed out. Edin Dan wondered why. Point five seconds later, he was in a fetal position at the bottom of a crater – a crater created by his own impact with the ground.

Michael, Apple, and Gyetang (who joined Khun’s team to see Endorsi – so you know he’s bright) converged on the crater.

“Oh, no. He’s not breathing,” Apple said (15:52), as Michael approached the crumpled figure.

Gyetang said, “Someone perform CPR!”

The comedic timing was spot on in this episode.

Tower of God Season Two Episode 05: It was nice seeing Hwaryun again.

It was such a strange little scene! In a good way! Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I like seeing Kuhn again. Though at first, I thought that Rachel might have fooled him. He even peeled apples for her and comforted her when she cried. I’ll give the voice actors for Kuhn Nobuhiko Okamoto) and Rachel (Saori Hayami) full credit. By the end of their scene, I wasn’t sure who was fooling whom.

And now we know.

That was a great scene. It nearly qualified as my favorite. But my favorite scene in this episode was another example of this episode’s comedic timing. Though Viole has been letting the entire team stay with him in his apartment (even doing chores, according to Wangnan Ja), Yihwa Yeon still doesn’t trust him. So she tailed him to the shopping district, where she expected him to go on some kind of rampage. And not the shopping kind.

She saw him enter a karaoke joint and heard a commotion. Certain that Viole was up to no good, she ducked into the establishment. And saw something very strange.

Some huge guy with a FUG tee-shirt was threatening some woman with red hair. The guy was apparently trying to extort money and used the FUG reputation as a weapon. He even claimed to be Viole.

Tower of God Season Two Episode 05: Pretend Viole wasn't very impressive.

Hwaryun seemed less than impressed. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

The red-haired woman was not in the least bit impressed. The camera tilted upward to show the woman had an eye patch. That’s when I recognized her as Hwaryun – the woman who offered to train Bam at the end of season 1. That’s cool, right?

She called the FUG-shirted man a “pig,” which did not thrill him. He lifted his weapon to strike her. That’s when Viole used an energy blast to knock the guy unconscious. Yihwa Yeon gasped in shock – she apparently hadn’t seen the real Viole standing there.

“Viole, your friend is here,” Hwaryum said, waving to Yihwa Yeon (21:56). In greeting, she added, “Hey.”

Between Hwaryun’s calm strength, Viole’s eagerness to protect her, and the absurd man with a FUG tee-shirt, the scene just struck me as hilarious. After the heavy reveals of Khun’s intend in climbing the tower and his plans for Rachel, this felt like a great way to end the episode.

What did you think of Khun’s plans for the tower and for Rachel? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

  1. I’m not really surprised that Kuhn figured out Rachel’s plot, he’s one smart cookie! But I’m kind of wondering if he really needed to spend quite so much time to get even with Rachel. I mean, it looks like it’s been years. Isn’t that a little too much of a long game?

    1. Good question!

I don’t know Kuhn’s goal — but like Dawnstorm said, don’t piss him off! He plans in the long term!

That begs the question — what is his long-term plan for Rachel? Is it merely revenge? Or does he have something else in mind?

One thing I think I can say after watching six episodes: while I prefer the art from the first season, the writing’s still on point. I’m pretty sure Kuhn will have an answer for us.

      1. I’m fairly sure Khun explained to that other guy that he’s keeping Rachel around because he suspects that someone behind the scenes orchestrates somethings and he needs her around to find out if that’s the case or not, and if – who?

Basically: Yeah, it’s mainly revenge, but he suspects that there are more targets than just Rachel.

  2. I’m not entirely sure Khun has Rachel fooled. What do you make of that mad, desperate laughter of Rachel’s near the end? I don’t know what to make of it, but it didn’t sound like she was… feeling in control of her situation. One interpretation would be that she knows full well that Khun doesn’t trust her, but has no option than to play along, seeing as revealing anything would surely escalate the situation. And if Khun suspects she suspects… then him consoling her over Bam’s death is a special kind of sadism. (Which it still is, even he doesn’t suspect her to suspect… Never piss this guy off; he’ll slowly get under your skin and unnerve you.)

I still don’t know (remember?) who or what FUG are, and I’m unsure whether I should know. They don’t seem to play well with the royals, but then the Tower appears to be free for all, even within factions… In any case, I’m fairly sure they’re not the sort of faction who wear a t-shirt with FUG printed on it.

    1. Honestly, I didn’t know what to make of her laugh. Maybe she’s just losing her mind? Overwhelmed by guilt? That said, you could easily be right. That means she either has a plan, or, as you say, can’t think of anything else to do but to go along.

If she has a plan, I’m betting it’s pretty cold.

I don’t remember FUG at all in the first season — and, yeah, having FUG in big letter on t-shirt isn’t the height of subtlety!

Please let me know what you think!
