Tower of God Season Two Episode 07 – Quick Summary

In Tower of God Season 2 episode 07, “Mazino Magic,” Viole came face to face with Urek Mazino, one of the most powerful beings in the Tower. And Mazino wanted the Zygaena flower for himself. Viole warns the rest of his team to stand back – he’s not sure he can take on Mazino, and he’s much more powerful than his team. Will his team listen? Does Viole really have a chance? And what’s that little creature wearing one of the flowers?

Tower of God Season Two Episode 07: Viole is still determined to help his friends

Viole hasn’t fundamentally changed since the first season. He’s just a little more measured now. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

My favorite quote came early in the episode. Mazino was waiting for Zygaena to flip, and he wanted to chat with Viole. Mazino assumed that Viole’s goal was to sit on the Tower of God’s throne. In other words, he assumed Viole was just another run-of-the-mill-I-want-power-and-I’ll-get-it-from-the-Tower variety of climber.

Mazino went on about how the Tower must seem cool to Viole, but that it was really tiny. Outside was much, much better in every conceivable way. Not only was there more freedom; but there were actually visible stars!

Mazino ended by saying his goal was the outside – and he didn’t know why Viole would settle for what was only in the Tower.

“”I don’t know,” Viole said (02:17). “After all, I don’t need thrones or stars. But I’ll fight anyone who tries to hurt the people I care about.”

Ah! That’s the Bam I knew and cheered on in the first season! It’s nice to see him so clearly declare himself again.

Favorite Moment from Tower of God Season Two Episode 07

Tower of God Season Two Episode 07: Mazino seemed surprised that Viole had managed to hurt him, even a little.

Seemed kind of cool that Mazino felt surprised he’d been injured. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I think the scene that evoked the strongest reason so far was the shot of Viole and Mazino about to crash into each other – just as Miseng Yeo and the little flower creature accidentally flew between them.

I expected one of two things: either Viole and Mazino would veer off, because both looked concerned for the little girl. Or, Mazino would just crash through her on his way to Viole. Yes, Mazino looked like he was surprised; but this is Tower of God. Folks plow through other folks all the time.

That was a cool, impactful moment. It ended by going beyond my expectations. Viole curled himself around Miseng Yeo and protected her from the confrontation. I should have expected that at the very least. Viole’s Bam of old, after all! But that wasn’t how it went beyond my expectations.

Tower of God Season Two Episode 07: Viole realized that Miseng Yeo was in the field of fire

Viole realized at the last moment that Miseng Yeo was in the field of fire. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

Later, Mazino returned to his lair. He made an interesting comment to his assistant, saying (08:38), “Let Yuri know I got it.” Is he working with Ha Yuri Jahad? That’d be cool. The more Yuri, the better! But then his assistant noticed that somehow, someone had cut Mazino’s cheek.

He was astonished. He’s not used to taking damage. But he seemed delighted.

“Did he do it then?” he wondered (08:46).

So not only did Viole have the strength and technique to protect Miseng Yeo. He also had the strength to strike Mazino, even if he only inflicted a tiny bit of damage. It’s nice to see that Viole’s strength is still remarkable. I like that in a protagonist!

  1. Hmm, I think l like the part where Bam defends Miseng and he actually gets hurt. I know that sounds bad, but I like it when anime has realistic repercussions to actions. Bam took the blow of a really powerful character, so it makes sense that he didn’t just get back up, brush himself off, and was perfectly fine. It makes sense that he was injured. I also like that right away Miseng feels bad about Bam getting injured for her, there’s no sweeping it under the rug, no shrugging and carrying on like nothing happened. Even at the end of the episode when Yihwa is re-assigned to care for Bam, Miseng is sitting by her trying to care for Bam too.

    1. That’s a good point. It certainly demonstrated that as powerful as Bam is, Mazino was even stronger.

I didn’t think I would like Miseng in the context of his brutal world. But she’s grown on me, and the things you mentioned are part of why.

  2. I’m not into seeing Yihwa be relegated to comic relief with the terrible cooking, but there might be a point to this if you recall from a previous episode. Yihwa took pride in her body and was furious when Bam said he didn’t care about it, which suggests that Yihwa might have insecurities about her worth as a woman/person, seeing her body as her only strong point. Perhaps these insecurities, if I am right about them, will eventually be addressed.

It’s hard to say whether this will actually be addressed or whether it’s just intentionally portraying Yihwa as incompetent. There is a lot of misogyny against women in both Koreas, so I don’t know whether the author will have the courage to push back against what his target audience may want.

    1. Yihwa is introduced as someone with fire magic/powers that she couldn’t control properly, so I’m hoping this is the first step in her journey to get better control of her fire powers. Maybe Bam will coach her in cooking and using her powers?

      1. I like that idea!

Bam teaching Yihwa might also help him make another friend. I think he’s apprehensive about making new friends because he’s afraid they’ll be turned into hostages. And maybe he’s right! But I hate to see him in the state he’s in now.

    2. I really hope it’s not a misogyny thing. I’m kinda over all that, what with the climate right now in some sections of the USA. I thought we’d grown beyond that. Guess it shows that someone even as cynical as me can be guilty of optimism from time to time!

I also hope we do see some kind of growth route for Yihwa. I like her as a character.

Please let me know what you think!
