Tower of God Season Two Episode 08 – Quick Summary

In Tower of God Season 2 episode 08, “Her Name is Emily,” Dan Edin had to prove himself to his teammate Ran. Unfortunately, though Dan’s scouting abilities had often been useful, he had to rely on a chatbot – with interesting results. Meanwhile, Wangnan Ja found himself separated from his team with the enemy in hot pursuit. Can he evade them until his team can find him? Or at least Viole?

Note: This post may include spoilers, so be cautious.

Tower of God Season Two Episode 08: Dan led Ran to a dead end

Dan disappointed Ran. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’m going to pick a quote that spoke to me as a cybersecurity professional.

I don’t know Emily is; I don’t recall seeing her or hearing of her before this episode. But since the previous episode, apparently Emily’s as a chatbot has become a popular source of information for those trying to climb the tower.

Dan’s scouting skills failed him, but Ran still expected him to find the enemy’s position. So, Dan asked Emily, and Emily told him to go right. Which led to a dead end (at least, it seemed to).

Looking up at the dead end, Ran said (02:04), “You shouldn’t have trusted a bot.”

As a security practitioner, I wholeheartedly endorse that observation!

Favorite Moment from Tower of God Season Two Episode 08

Tower of God Season Two Episode 08: Viole had five baangs

I have to wonder: Is Viole capable of more than five? Maybe he’s smart enough to hold back to hide his true capabilities? Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

I’ll be honest with you: I’m struggling to like this season. I’ve been trying to ignore the issue since the start of the season. I understand some studios are struggling; many animators are working under terrible conditions. But seeing how this season drew Endorsi, one of my favorite characters from the first season, wrecked my resolve to ignore the art and animation.

In my notes, at 14:56, around the time Wangnan Ja was pretending to be Chirpy the pet, I wrote, “I don’t know if I can do this anymore.” I had to go play Fallout Four to clear my head (I cleared out Covenant in this play-through). But I finished it, and I’m going to pick a favorite moment. If you are enjoying this season, please don’t let my opinion diminish that! And though I may complain about it from time to time, I‘m still committed to finding a favorite quote and a favorite moment until this season ends.

My favorite moment is just after Viole shows up and rescues Wangnan Ja from the fire dude. The fire dude launches another attack, this time with three separate baangs. Wangnan Ja’s all freaked out. Even Viole looks apprehensive.

Tower of God Season Two Episode 08: Viole pretended to be apprehensive

At first, Viole seemed to be worried. Capture from the Crunchyroll stream.

But in the case of Viole, it was an act. As the fire dude stood there with three attacks ready to go, Viole countered with five.

“What?” the fire dude said (16:56). “You’ve got two more than me?”

And that was pretty much the end of that fight.

What did you make of the shot of Emily at the end? Or was that Emily? What were your favorite moments? Feel free to share in the comments!

    1. The possible destruction of the tower is interesting. I really have no idea what’s outside it — or deeper inside, I guess. We’ve gotten an occasional hint, like from Mazino.

  1. Yeah, this episode was kind of weird, the two year time jump kind of threw me for a loop! In the last episode everyone was still getting to know each other, and now their all friends, but we didn’t get to see how that happened. I feel like this season of TOG isn’t as good as the first one, but it’s still got plenty of time to turn things around.

    1. That’s a good point — we missed all the interactions that would have brought us closer to the characters. Many of my favorite moments in the first season were Bam, Khun, and Rak’s becoming friends, in some cases the hard way.

For me, the art is the most jarring difference between the two seasons, but that seems to drive some pacing decisions that I don’t understand. Well, like you said — they have plenty of time to turn it around!

  2. Rachel and Bam/Viole are a fascinating study of the effect a woman can have on a man.

We don’t know who is behind Emily. We don’t know how much agency Emily has and how much she wants. This will get interesting.

    1. I remember some advice my parents gave me: always be friends first! But Rachel’s cunning would have defeated that advice.

I’m very curious how Emily’s going to fit into all this. The art might struggle to keep up, but the story’s still solid (if paced in a way that makes me raise an eyebrow!).

  3. But I forgot that someone in the episode said he wanted to save Emily, so maybe that woman is Emily after all. I don’t take back that she is enslaved though as I’m fairly confident that is almost certainly the case.

  4. I don’t think the women with the VR set or whatever that was was Emily. Emily the chatbot probably has some connection to that woman with that setup being something the woman doesn’t want.

Maybe this woman can see everything that happens in the tower at once, and that is how Emily is so useful. The woman clearly looks like she is enslaved to me with Emily possibly feeding off pf her power.

    1. I had the same sense. The woman might have provided the patterns for Emily; but she seemed to think she was distinct from her.

Seeing everything in the tower? That’d be a handy power to have!

Please let me know what you think!
